Today fuel prices are so high everyone is trying to do what they can to save on gasoline when filling up their cars. There are many things you can do to help your car run more efficiently which will help save money on fuel. Many of these things are easy to do and you will be amazed at the difference in the way your car runs and your gas mileage.

A simple thing you can do is to park your car in your garage if you have one. By parking in your garage you will help your car stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer, which means you won’t have to use the air conditioner or defroster as much. The air conditioner and defroster play havoc on your gas mileage, they both make your car use more gas while they are in use.

You should check your tire pressure at least once a month. You can find the recommended tire pressure in your owner’s manual or it is sometimes on a card in your car door. You should make sure that you check the tire pressure when the tires are cold. A good time to check this is first thing in the morning since your car has been idle overnight. They have digital tire pressure gauges that make it easy for you to read the pressure and you can keep it in your glove box.

You can also increase your gas mileage by keeping your car in tune. You should make sure that your vehicle has regular tune-ups. Another thing to be on the lookout for is worn spark plugs; a misfiring sparkplug can reduce your car’s fuel efficiency by as much as 30%.

You can also improve your gas mileage by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil. You should look for motor oil that is the right weight for your car and also look for oil that is labeled energy conserving. This type of oil contains friction reducing additives to help your car run smoother.

You should keep a close eye on your engines air filter. If the engine air filter gets clogged with dirt and dust or insects it will make your engine work harder, therefore, be less fuel-efficient. It is recommended that you change your car’s air and oil filter every three months or 3000 miles. When you replace a clogged air filter it could improve your gas mileage by as much as 10%. It is also recommended that when you have your oil changed you should also change the engine air filter at the same time.

The key to getting better gas mileage is to make sure that your car is properly maintained. You should be very serious about your auto care because your car’s performance depends on it. You should always try to follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. This is because a vehicle is designed to run a certain way and if you neglect it, the vehicle won’t be as efficient.
