Everyone has that closet. You know the one, the graveyard. It’s the closet (or maybe the garage) that is filled to the brim with exercise equipment and sports equipment. These are the sports that you were so positive that you were going to love, or the exercise equipment that you knew was going to be the key to the model physique you always dreamed of. Now it is all getting dusty where fitness equipment goes to die. Instead of holding on to this junk, why not sell it, and take the money you make and buy a bicycle. Whether you start out with regular bicycling or go straight to mountain biking, this will be a sport that you stick with it. Biking is fun and challenging sport that allows you to strengthen your body and helps you lose weight. It’s a great activity to do with friends or family and can be a wonderful way to travel. If you are one of the many people that takes the leap to commuting by bicycle, your waistline will decrease size and your wallet will increase.

As your previous attempts at getting into shape have failed, you may think it’s a good idea to buy a cheap bicycle to start out with. While there is no need to drop thousands of dollars for a professional mountain bike, you should spend a little extra to get a good quality bike that fits your body and that you are comfortable with. Bicycles are not like baseball bats or lacrosse sticks, having poor quality won’t just make you perform badly, it could get you hurt. Don’t be cheap with your bicycle, and certainly don’t be cheap with your equipment. You may want to look into a used bike. This is not necessarily a bad thing, however do to the importance of safety, you will need to make sure that you know exactly how old the bike is, if it has had any problems or accidents and why did the previous owners give it up. After your bicycle has been purchased, you will need to find a good quality helmet to protect yourself in case of an accident. Along the same lines, you should purchase eye protection, comfortable clothing and shoes for your ride. You don’t need to spend a ton, but do make sure that you are getting quality items, your safety should be your top concern.

After you have been mountain biking for a while and fallen in love with the sport (as I am confident you will), you may want to look into traveling with your bike. With the assistance of a bike rack, you can take your bike with you wherever you go. These bike racks come in several different designs to fit your needs. Depending on what type of vehicle you have, you may choose a bike rack that attaches to the roof, to the back or in the truck bed. You can find these racks for almost any price range. Be sure to do some research before purchasing any of this equipment. You can find deals in sporting goods stores or through the newspaper but your best resource will most likely be the internet.
