The creation of a last will and testament is a great way to provide legal and financial protection to those you care about, but it can be difficult to face this important decision. After all none of us likes to think about our own mortality, and making out a last will and testament certainly forces people to think about this unpleasant subject.

Even so it is important to be prepared for the inevitable, and even young and healthy people can be struck down by unforeseen circumstances. With so much at stake it is important for every responsible adult to create a last will and testament. This important document provides many valuable protections, both legal and financial, to those left behind.

A last will and testament can also provide valuable emotional support to family members in their time of need. By having a will in place you can assure that your final wishes are carried out and that the assets you have worked so hard to accumulate will be distributed according to your wishes. Having a will in place is also a great way to avoid any family disputes that may arise from the distribution of those assets. Many people do not realize it but a last will and testament is actually a valuable tool for keeping peace and sanity in the family.

With so much at stake it is important to prepare carefully for the creation of this vital document. Having everything you need on hand will make the process of creating your lasting testament a lot easier and less stressful. Let’s take a look at what you will need to do to prepare for the creation of your last will and testament.

Lay Out All of Your Documents

The first step is to gather up all of your financial statements, both paper copies and printouts of any electronic documents you may receive from various banks and brokerage firms. It is important to be thorough during this process, since the only assets that will be protected by the will are those that are named in the document.

An additional word of caution related to electronic records is in order here. These days so many of us conduct our financial lives online, using accounts that are secured with strong and difficult to guess passwords. When a loved one dies it can be difficult if not impossible for the family members left behind to gain access to those accounts. You can make things a lot easier by creating a written list of passwords and storing it in a safe place like a safety deposit box. You may even want to attach a copy of your password list to your last will and testament and keep both in a fireproof safe, safety deposit box or other secure location. Remember to update your list as your passwords change, and be sure to let your family members know where those passwords can be found.

Gather Up Those Important Documents

Rounding up your financial documents is an important first step, but it is also important to gather other vital documents, including the deed to the family home and any other real estate, copies of any life insurance policies and the like. Having these documents on hand will make it easier for the attorney creating the will to determine what assets you have and how those assets are to be distributed after your death.

This kind of preparation is vital and it will make the creation of your last will and testament much easier and much less stressful. So if you have been putting off the creation of this essential document why not start gathering your documents today? Your family will be glad you did.
