Few students live a life of luxury. To help you manage financially, a number of scholarships are available to you.

The Swedish Institute, a government agency, administers over 500 scholarships each year for students and researchers coming to Sweden to pursue their objectives at a Swedish university.

The number of available scholarships varies from year to year, and competition is keen. Most foreign students in Sweden finance their stay without help from scholarships.

Swedish Institute scholarships for students applying to English-language programs in Sweden are mainly for master’s level studies or advanced studies/research.

There are several different kinds of Swedish Institute scholarship available. You can find them listed here.

The Swedish Institute also administers bilateral exchange programs with China, Germany, Italy, and Japan. Students and researchers from these countries can apply for funding for academic pursuits in Sweden via this channel as well.

Guest Scholarship Program:the Guest Scholarship Program awards scholarships to students from selected ODA countries. Scholarships are given for master’s level, PhD, and post-doctoral level studies as well as to students of Swedish language and literature.

The Visby Program — Swedish Institute Baltic Sea Region Exchange ProgramFor academic institutions and individuals from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania as well as Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia. Grants are awarded for projects and for individual scholarships.

Swedish-Turkish ProgramFor citizens of Turkey pursuing master’s level or advanced level studies in Sweden in the field of social sciences and law, such as International and European Relations, European Affairs, European Law, or Human Rights Law.

The Bicentennial Swedish-American Exchange FundThe Bicentennial Fund is open to applicants from the U.S. and awards grants for two to four weeks’ length in amounts of up to SEK 30,000. It is specifically intended for professional enrichment.

Pakistan Overseas Scholarship Scheme:this scholarship program is exclusively open to Pakistani nationals aiming to pursue master’s level and PhD studies in Sweden. Please note that the Pakistan Higher Education Commission (HEC) has put on hold all scholarships for 2009.

Master in Sweden for East Europe:the program is open to applicants from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.

Other organizations, both Swedish and foreign, also sponsor scholarships for foreign students in Sweden.
