When we drive, we all have things that will distract our attention. Driving while distracted is normal, if not expected. However, it becomes dangerous when we are distracted too long or our attention is taken away from driving and has shifted on to something else. When I was visiting my parents in New York, I was traveling somewhere with my mother and my younger brother. I knew that it was going to be a recipe for disaster. You see, whenever my mom, brother and I travel together and she is driving, for whatever reason it really distracts her attention from driving. While she's trying to think of something to say back to one or the both of us in a response to something that we may have said, her driving will slow down or she'll miss a turn or she'll sit at a red light that has since turned green. However, my mom isn't the only person like this.

Millions of Americans become incredibly distracted whenever there are other people in the car with them. We all have that one thing about our driving that is incredibly distracting. For a while, every time one of my friends spotted a Cadillac CTS on the road while driving, she almost invariably had to find a way to turn around and get a second look at it. I also had another friend who was obsessed with old cars, and everytime he saw one parked along the side of the road or in someone's driveway, all of his attention was on that other car instead of on the road.

If you know that you become seriously distracted while driving, perhaps you need to take stronger steps towards improving your ability to focus. Think about where it is you are heading to as well as what your purpose for being out on the roadway is. If you are someone who is just 'out for a drive' what time of day are you out? Perhaps the better time of day to go out for a leisurely ride is some other time other than rush hour when you have anxious drivers who want to get home and not be stuck behind someone who is 'taking it easy'. For drivers who have some flexibility, avoid going out during the times of the day when the roads are crowded. If you are in the mood to go house hunting or simply drive around some neighborhoods, do it on Sunday morning or a time of day when you know that the traffic flow won't be as bad.

If you are the kind of person who become incredibly distracted when there are other people in the car, perhaps you should alert them to this and allow one of them to drive. If you don't feel comfortable having someone else drive your car, then at least try to make your crowded trips during times of the day when the roads are less congested. I have ridden in the car with people who have to have absolute silence as well as people who said that the radio was too distracting, therefore the shut it off.
