The UK is full of interesting and historical cities and Edinburgh is fashionable with worldwide visitors and domestic travellers. Its combination of culture and history, dining venues, shopping opportunities and visitor attractions can compete with any other city in Europe and if you are looking for a weekend away or a short break with the family it is the perfect base from which to explore the rest of Scotland and its beauty.

Voted in 2008 as one of the top 10 cities in the world by ‘Wanderlust’, Edinburgh has also received high recommendation from the Trip Advisor Destination Awards. Tourists arrive here in their droves every day to admire the outstanding medieval buildings, chic Georgian town houses, quaint cobblestoned streets and unbelievable sights. With streets soaked in history, a fascinating culture, rousing festivals and first-rate dining venues it’s not too difficult to see why the city is a popular destination for many.

Located in the heart of the city the medieval Old Town and Georgian New Town district holds the prestigious title of ‘UNESCO World Heritage Site’ and is a pleasant area to walk around. Its graceful terraces, amble through its cobbled streets and take a stroll up to the castle for its dazzling views of the city below and surrounding countryside, and discover the wealth of stores, bars and restaurants.

Edinburgh attracts all kinds of travellers and there something to be found in the city to arouse the interest of travellers whatever their age or nationality. If you are in the city with friends, family or as a group the diversity of activities on offer will guarantee something to suit. Edinburgh Castle sits high above the city acting as a magnet to visitors, the River Forth is perfect for a romantic cruise, the volcanic Arthur’s Seat is worth a trip and the Pentland Hills are a hike away from the crowds.

Summer in the city is an exciting and stimulating experience, book a hotel well in advance as the city is packed with visitors here to experience its many festivals. There are an abundance of cheap hotels existing in the city centre and online accommodation is simple to book.

The Edinburgh International Festival has a succession of exciting events lined up daily featuring performers and artists involved in the arts. With six main theatres and concert halls, as well as a number of minor venues, you are never short of the opportunity to see theatre, opera international classical music and dance events.

The 2009 Edinburgh Military Tattoo is about to celebrate its 60th season with a celebration of the 250th birthday of the national bard, Robert Burns. Live evening performances are held on the castle esplanade with performers from over 40 countries as the event is televised all around the world. The Tattoo is opened with a mass of bands marching across the drawbridge, surrounded by effigies of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The show itself is a colourful display of music and dance.

The leading festival of the 'Edinburgh Festivals' is The Fringe featuring theatre, comedy, music, dance and exhibitions. Here you will find street musicians playing alongside famous showbiz names and every type of art from the theatre to comedy routines and children's shows to dance, operas and demonstrations. Check out cheap hotels online UK to guarantee your accommodation before you go.

The Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival has plenty of free events starting off with the Mardi Gras carnival. Blending the sounds of jazz with a party atmosphere everyone dresses up in masks and costumes as the parade leaves the City Chambers and heads to the Grassmarket for hours of non-stop music. Expect to see poetry, Gospel, Jazz, and Scottish musicians alongside international players in a mix of jazz and originality.
