I'm not one to brag, but I will take this opportunity to say that I think I am a good driver. Having been a police officer in the past, I have certainly grown accustomed to the bad driving habits which seem to habitually follow certain drivers around. However, I am here to say that although bad habits are difficult to break, it is not impossible. And nowhere else is this more important than when it comes to your safety on the roadways as well as the safety of other people (drivers and pedestrians included) around you.

Typically, most people espouse that they are “great” drivers. However, this is not the case. Great drivers follow ALL the rules that govern the roadways for where they live, and this includes even the finest details. For example, how often do you look down at your hands on the steering wheel to notice that they are in the “10 and 3” position...or that they are even on the wheel at all? At some point, we are all guilty of driving “hands-free” while the majority of us frequently drive with only one of our hands at a time. The other hand usually finds itself occupied with things such as: changing the radio station, eating, dialing someone's phone number, handing some item to another passenger in the car or waving at someone outside of your vehicle. Sound familiar now? Granted, none of us are perfect drivers, but the majority of us could certainly strive to become better ones.

People frequently forget that while driving is something we are all exposed to and can do with a little practice and a passing grade on our road tests, it is nonetheless a privilege- not a right. Keeping this in mind, when you get onto the roadways with other drivers, it quickly becomes apparent that this is not the case. Besides fighting your way to squeeze in between two other vehicles so that you can merge successfully on a highway to having someone tailgate you the entire way back to your neighborhood, other drivers can be downright nasty with their bad habits. Perhaps, we all need to take a few deep breaths while we are driving and reassess the situations that we are faced with. For instance, between certain hours of the day where you live, you know that the roads are going to be more congested. There will be people who are cranky while behind the wheel because they hate their job, broke up with a girlfriend, are going through a divorce, worried about their kids being sick or any other plethora of reasons.

Realizing that there are tons of stressful drivers out there, we need to do everything we can to keep our stress at bay while driving so that it doesn't affect how we react once we are in the car. If people took driving a little more seriously and actually thought it through, perhaps they would use better judgment and get into less accidents. Remember, most accidents are preventable!
