There is no doubt that these days we have to be careful when we drive. I know that when I get in my car and prepare to pull out into traffic, it isn't my driving that I'm worried about so much as it is the other drivers on the roadway that worry me. Sadly, too many people seem to be in a rush to get nowhere soon. The problem stems from impatience as well as from those people who exercise lack of good judgment while driving on the roads.

There are examples of people driving poorly everywhere you look. For example, did you know that it is not safe to switch lanes right before you approach a red light if there is a person right behind you? As I was approaching a red light a few days ago, the driver in the lane next to me suddenly decided that they didn't want to be in that lane anymore, so they decided to cut me off and slow down for the red light. As a result, I had to apply pressure to my brakes as did the person behind me. Had we not been paying attention and driving defensively, what may have seemed harmless to the driver at fault could've resulted in a somewhat serious accident.

There are many reasons to take it easy on the roadways. The first and foremost reason is the safety of those around you. Whether or not you realize it, when we are driving, we are choosing whether or not to put other people around us at risk. You may be the best driver out there, but it doesn't mean anything if you don't practice driving defensively. An interesting exercise to try the next time you get in your car to drive somewhere is to count all of the mistakes that other drivers make when they are on the road. For instance, how many people do you observe using their turn signals when they are turning off of or onto a street or when they are switching lanes? At night, how many drivers do you observe with their parking lights on instead of their full headlights? What about not having their lights on at all?

I cannot tell you how many times I have observed other drivers breaking the rules on the road. Everything from switching lanes at an intersection without signaling to blatantly running red lights only to have to stop at the next one a few hundred feet away. There is a reason why there are speed limits posted every few hundred feet; it's to protect us from ourselves. Perhaps we need to have more “Sunday Drivers” in order to ensure that we are at least driving more slowly. However, even those people who drive slowly can make mistakes while driving. For example, the other day, I saw a car up ahead in the same lane as me, and I noticed that all the cars in front of me were veering around it because it was going well below the speed limit. I, too, went around this car and when I did, I noticed that there was a girl behind the wheel who seemed to be fully engrossed in a conversation! Instead of pulling off to the side of the road to have her conversation, she was impeding the flow of traffic during a busy time of day. Unbelievable.

When you are behind the wheel of a vehicle, you need to be considerate of other drivers. This means obeying the posted speed limits and exercising good judgment when following the rules of the road for where you live.
