Controlling how you drive has a lot more to do with your skill as a driver as well as your knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the roadways. Controlling how you drive also means knowing how and when to control your emotions while you are driving. For example, too many times I have been in the car with someone who was having a bad day and decided to take it out on other unsuspecting drivers (of course with me in the car). This meant that they were running red lights, driving erratically, honking their horns at people who they felt were driving too slow (when in fact they were driving the speed limit), etc.

If you are having a bad day or if you are emotionally going through some tough times, perhaps it is best to drive when the roadways are less crowded. If you don't have a choice in the matter and absolutely have to be on the roads when it is really busy outside, then you may need to pull over to the side of the road in order to compose yourself. Just make sure that you do it safely.

There is no shame in having a “bad day,” however, there is something shameful in having a bad day and then having that translate into bad or unsafe driving habits. A lot of the time, it isn't your driving that gets you in trouble; rather, it is the other drivers that you often have to keep an eye out for. You never know what other drivers out there are having bad days or are on edge because a business deal fell through or because they lost a loved one, etc. In this case, your best defense is to be a defensive driver. Pay attention to everything around you. Don't just rely on your side mirrors and rear view mirror. Make sure you always indicate before you change lanes, and look over you shoulder before you do so.

If you are driving with a regular “chatty kathy” in your car and there is something going on on the roadway ahead that requires your full attention, don't be afraid to turn the radio down and ask the person to momentarily remain quiet while you try to focus. It is much better to have a perturbed passenger than a dead or injured one! There are many things that we can do to be a better driver. Being a good driver doesn't mean that you are great at changing lanes and driving in a straight line. Being a great driver means that you are able to take in what is going on around you and act accordingly and effectively with a quick reaction time if necessary in order to avoid getting into an accident. It means obeying the posted speed limit and letting other drivers know your intentions at all times.

By being a more defensive driver, you can do the other drivers a favor by setting a good example. The same holds true for anyone who rides in your car as a passenger. However being a good defensive driver comes with time and practice.
