About four years ago, when I was still in college, I started to notice that I would occasionally have difficulty driving at night. The problem only crept up every now and again whenever I was following directions or navigating my way to a place that I hadn't previously been before. Then, when the fall semester started for graduate school, I noticed that I was having difficulty seeing the blackboard. I wasn't sitting terribly far away from it either, so at first I thought that perhaps it was the professor's handwriting that I was simply having trouble deciphering..that was until I asked the other people in the class if they were having the same problem. It turned out I was the only one. I felt bad having to constantly ask my friend who sat next to me if I could see her notes. I decided to go and have my eyes checked, and it turned out that I needed glasses. I'm glad that I decided to go and have my eyes checked.

Driving is dangerous enough, but driving when your vision is even slightly impaired doubles your chances of becoming involved in a motor vehicle accident. There were a few close calls that I had driving back from classes at night where I would get off at an exit ramp, round the turn and barely miss hitting deer. I found that shadows appeared to look like animals and animals looked like shadows to me. It was horrible. If I didn't already know where I was going and had to follow directions, I would have extreme difficulty reading the street names on signs until I was right on the sign or had already passed it. Since I have gotten glasses, my vision is where it should be. Driving at night is no longer nearly as worrisome as it was when I couldn't see clearly.

If you even have a single suspicion about your vision, don't hesitate to have it checked out by a professional. Don't wait until it is too late and you've gotten into an accident. If you do have a prescription for glasses, make sure that you purchase at least two pairs. One pair of glasses should remain in your personal vehicle at all times while the other one you can carry with you wherever you go. For people with seriously impaired vision (mine is only slight), depending on what state you live in, it may be required that you report the fact that you wear glasses and/or contact lenses to your local DMV. The DMV will then issue you a new license with a code on it that indicates you wear glasses. In the event that you are ever pulled over by a police officer or other government official, when they examine your license, they will be able to see that you wear glasses, and this information may play a significant role in whether or not you are issued a ticket.

One thing is for certain, having the best vision possible while driving is important. It will help you be more aware of your surroundings and may help you to increase your reaction time in order to avoid getting into an accident that may have been prevented otherwise.
