“What, you can write 40 articles on that one topic?” asked a colleague when I was describing strategies for getting more traffic to one of my web sites.

Publishing more articles on a single topic boosts your search engine standing for the keywords in those articles as well as the odds one or more of them will be read by a potential customer or reprinted. However, I’d written 14 articles and couldn’t think up additional topics. Going to blogs written by other experts on this topic didn’t help. I’d covered the essential points.

Then I read a discussion of “article spinners” (software that supposedly creates readable variants of existing articles), looked at one such program and the light bulb went on. I realized that it’s fine for the articles to overlap. And with that insight, I immediately saw ways to generate several dozen more articles.

If, like me, you have high writing standards, these methods enable you to write dozens more interesting, well-written articles, without appearing to repeat yourself.

1. Redo themes you’ve already written on with a different article title and completely different examples. Here the general outline and major points are the same, but no sentences are exactly the same in both versions.

2. Take a positive theme and reverse it to negative and vice versa. So if you’ve written on five mistakes or pitfalls, turn that into five guidelines. If you’ve written five tips, turn that into five don’ts.

3. Where you’ve collected many do’s and don’ts in one article, break them out in more depth, each point getting its own article-length treatment.

4. Look back through what you’ve already written to see if there’s a casual comment you tossed in that you can expand into an article of its own. For instance, I’d mentioned in passing the most common reasons people hired my company and now built articles around each of those reasons.

5. Go to one or more of the article directories and see which articles are most viewed in your category of interest. That’s probably because of a particular keyword or phrase in the title, which people are searching for. Then build new articles around top keywords you can relate to, using ideas from some of your other articles.

6. Change the format of the article. For instance, apart from the tip format of the article you’re now reading, you could write a checklist, a quiz, questions and answers or step-by-step instructions.

Since I’ve writing professionally since 1981, once I have a new angle and an article idea, I can easily take it from there and turn out a new, interestingly written article that shares content with other things I’ve done but no identical or even similar sentences.

Mission accomplished! After the first five articles, I now know how to turn that into 40 or more, without boring readers or myself. Try it yourself and reap the benefits of more search engine traffic, greater credibility and farther reach.
