Do you need to take a break from the humdrum of life but don’t have a lot to spend for it? Discover what fun you will get out of your meager holiday budget in Philly.

If you are looking for a different and affordable holiday experience, Philadelphia is a good place to visit. Aside from excellent accommodations at relatively low rates, the city has a wide range of things to do for visitors.

Here are some tourist activities you will enjoy and remember Philly by as a place that gave you one of your happiest moments.

Be Rocky for a spell. Run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum and be Rocky Balboa, the underdog boxing character played by Sylvester Stallone in Rocky. Rocky’s triumphant run on the steps in five films is now a popular thing to do among tourists visiting Philly. And as that is free, you can strike a pose and snap a photo beside the bronze Rocky statue at the base for a quick souvenir shot. Adult admission to the Museum is at $14 on weekdays but on Sundays, a dollar or a hundred will be fine.

Experience American history at close range in America’s Cradle of Liberty. The Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are tourist must-see sites. The City of Brotherly Love is where modern United States emerged from with the historic signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. Admission to both is free and you can investigate the crack on the bell yourself. You can then move, get a timed tour ticket and join a guided tour by a National Park Service Ranger.

Eat American. Food is inevitably a part of a people’s culture and trying out local offerings is a great tourist activity in Philadelphia. One thing tourists must not miss devouring while in Philly is its famous, gooey greasy cheese steak.

You will find the Reading Terminal Market a worthwhile visit too. Rick’s Philly Steaks serves you a sandwich, chips and a soda pop for less than $10 for a truly Philly bite into Americana. You will not get to taste this anywhere else.

Take a walk in Chinatown. It is a bustling section of Philly and definitely part of its multicultural society. Lunch or dinner here is a gastronomic experience. It is a taste of the East right in the West. Philly’s Chinatown is not only Chinese-flavored. You also have options of a Japanese, Thai, Malaysian and Vietnamese restaurants here. And the market stalls are filled of goodies and souvenirs that sell for even under a dollar.

Visit the Mitter Museum. What is an ancient historical city without its share of morbid collections? Located at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia is a collection of skulls labeled with names, occupations and dates of death of the once living, along with a collection of intestines and other human bio materials and bizarre medical instruments for the morbidly curious. The Miitter Museum admits adults for $12.

Philly is not all about learning their culture and history though. Get a taste of the vibrant urban life of the city. Window shop inside their big shopping malls and go out for a drink at night.

There are plenty of other inexpensive activities for a truly pleasant Philly experience. There are local shows and events you can attend and lot of restaurants to try. Holiday on a budget is definitely not a dull trip if you take your pennies to Philly and experience what the Cradle of Liberty has to offer you. For more information and suggestions for fun things to do, ask locals or the staff at the Independence Visitors Center.
