Mei Tai carriers are soft, unstructured baby carriers that allow caregivers a convenient way to carry or “wear” their infants and toddlers. The Mei Tai is an Asian-style carrier, based on the carriers first seen hundreds years ago where mothers wrapped their baby in a large scrap of cloth, then wrapped the cloth around their bodies to carry babies out of harm’s way and close to them as they worked their daily tasks.

The modern Mei Tai carrier (pronounced “may tie”) is used in countries all around the world. It features a soft, fabric square or rectangle as the body of the carrier with strips of cloth extending from each of the four corners. These strips of cloth are wrapped and tied around the body of the person carrying the baby to keep the child snug against the adult’s body.

Tying and folding the rectangle of fabric on the mai tai carrier creates leg holes for the baby and positions the straps for use by the adult caregiver. Because the straps are tied, the Mei Tai carrier is carrier adjustable for all different sizes of adults.

The Mei Tai carrier is popular because it distributes the weight of the baby over both shoulders rather than one, leading to less back strain than a sling or baby pouch for many wearers. The carrier is easy to use, and one size fits most wearers. Some larger caregivers may have to purchase an extra large size. The Mei Tai carrier is excellent for a high back carry.

The baby can be carried on the front or back with a Mei Tai carrier, for keeping the baby safe and secure while shopping, doing chores around the house or walking in the park or along a sidewalk. They are convenient for use while shopping as well.

Attaching the mai tai carrier for a front carry is a simple process. Putting the pattern side down, you tie the bottom straps around your waist like an apron. Then pick the baby up, hold him or her in front of you, and fold the carrier up snug around the baby and over both of your shoulders. The straps cross in the back, then tie again in the front.

Some negatives of the Mei Tai carrier are that it is less convenient for a newborn than some of the slings, pouches and wraps that are available. However, the body of the carrier can be rolled down to allow the newborn to see and support the head.

The learning curve for using the carrier may be a little high – some new parents are intimidated by the mai tai carrier when they first get it. It generally takes a little practice to learn exactly how to place the baby and tie the knots to snuggly and securely hold the baby in place. Tying the baby on the back is tricky, and takes longer to master than the front tie.

Many parents love the Mei Tai carrier for its history and ease of use, and the flexibility it offers in a cozy, comfortable carrier.
