Driving and texting has turned into such an issue that the state of North Carolina has now banned it completely from being allowed. In fact, if a police officer catches you doing this while you drive, you will get a ticket for it. There's no talking your way out of that one!

Admittedly, when I got my new cell phone a couple of months back, whenever the light would turn red, I was sitting there checking my email and/or responding to an email via text. I didn't realize it, but I became so engrossed several times at the lights, that I actually had people honking at me to let me know that the light had changed. It didn't take me long to realize that I could not drive and text at all. Instead, at the warning of my mother, I now wait until I am parked and/or out of my car before I look at my phone to text on it. I can barely even walk and text, so why should I be driving and texting?!

Besides being dangerous as ever, the main thing with texting is that it takes your attention and focus away from where it should be in the first place, which is on the road in front of you. Driving is dangerous enough and comes with its own set of rules that we must all obey and adhere to. For instance, all it takes is glancing down at your dashboard to change the radio to become involved in a vehicular accident. A few weeks ago, I drove by an accident near my home where a motorcyclist had apparently lost control of his motorcycle when he neglected to pay attention to the fact that the traffic in front of him had stopped. In an effort to over correct in order to compensate for his lack of attention, he plowed into a pedestrian who was out for a walk on the sidewalk. No one was killed, thankfully, though both the pedestrian and the motorcyclist were seriously injured.

It is sad to think that most (if not all) accidents involving people and vehicles are preventable. However, it is due to our lack of attention as well as aggression or being in a rush OR being distracted that often causes us to harm ourselves and others. It's great that cell phones were invented and that we are inherently more mobile now as a result (no pun intended). However, when it comes to driving and driving safely, perhaps we ought to heed the warnings and put the cell phones away until we are able to safely conduct a conversation.

If you want to drive and text, you are not only putting your own safety at risk, but you are risking the safety and well being of others around you. It is ok to text message back and forth on your cell phone as long as you are the passenger and not the driver. If you find that you are still really tempted to use your cell phone while driving, then try the whole “out of sight; out of mind” thing in which you put the cell phone away in a bag somewhere out of sight and out of reach while you are driving.
