Windsurfing has gained great popularity across the world. Countries like France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Australia and the United States have emerged as global windsurfing hubs with a number of windsurfing locations and favourable surfing conditions. The United Kingdom too is gradually developing into a popular windsurfing destination due to good surfing locations and conditions.

Windsurfing Locations in UK

There are many windsurfing locations – on and off the coast. They include Dorset, Devon and Cornwall with Poole Harbour being a popular coastline surfing spot. Apart from the Poole Harbour, yet another coastal windsurfing spot is the Weymouth Harbour. The Poole Harbour and the Weymouth Harbour offer surfing conditions favourable for beginners as well as experienced surfers.

Britain’s East Sussex also boasts of some great windsurfing hotspots like Rye Watersports at Camber Sands and Lagoon Watersports in Brighton. Camber Sands is a great option for beginner windsurfers as it has a shallow lagoon. Beginners can also opt for the inland lake of Hove to practice basic maneuvers. Apart from these, the Hayling Island along with the proteted lagoon ‘The Ray’ is also great options for windsurfing.

Windsurfing Spots in Wales & Scotland

Wales offers perfect wind conditions for the experienced windsurfers. Anglesey and Rhosneigr are considered as paradise by windsurfing enthusiasts. Beginners can opt for Pembrokeshire Coast in south Wales or West Wales Wind in Haverfordwest.

Scotland too has its share of prime windsurfing destinations. The famous island of Tiree, with its Atlantic winds, attracts surfers not just from the UK but from countries worldwide.

Windsurfing Clubs in UK

Irrespective of whether you are a novice or an experienced surfer, being a part of a surfing club is always an added advantage. These clubs not only help in enhancing your windsurfing skills but also in interacting with other windsurfers in your area.

The United Kingdom Windsurfing Association (UKWA) is responsible for organizing surfing events at the national level. Some of the major regional level windsurfing clubs in north England include Southport Board Sailing Association, West Pennine Sailboard Club, Northumbrian club and the North Lincolnshire & Humbershire Sailing Club. Central England consists of clubs like the Barnt Green Sailing Club, Brogborough Boardsailing Club and Trent Windsurfing Club. In the south, there are clubs like the Christchurch Boardsailing Club, the Poole Slalom Club, the Hythe and Saltwood Sailing Club, Minnis Bay Windsurfing Club and the Eastbourne Angling Club. Yet another popular sailing club in London is the BTYC Sailsports Club.

The Clyde Windsurfing club is a major windsurfing club in Scotland.

There are several training centers in UK that help you master the sport easily. These training centers are a great help in practicing windsurfing for all levels. The Royal Air Force (RAF) Sailing Association, Windsurfing Academy and Aqua Sports Company are some of the leading windsurfing training associations in UK that provide intensive training an guidance on windsurfing for all levels.

Windsurfing Events in UK

There are several national and regional level windsurfing events held in UK every year. These include the UK Slalom championship, UK Freestyle competition and the National Windsurfing Festival. These events add great value to the windsurfing culture of the nation.

With such a vibrant windsurfing landscape, it is but natural that UK is increasingly considered as a great windsurfing destination of the world.
