Writing articles for article sites may seem like a lot of work for not much instant gain, but done right a set of articles can earn you ongoing money long after you have done the initial work. This a terrific work from home job that you can do in between other jobs, using knowledge you already have.

The concept of article marketing is simple. You write a 500-800 word informative article on something you know about or have researched. Try to hit topics that online advertisers are interested in - you will be making money from advertising that appears next to your article. Advertisers who traditionally pay high rates include banks, insurance companies, home improvement stores and dating sites.

You can use online tools to find out what keywords advertisers are spending money on, and write articles using those words. For example, if you know how to build an outdoor wooden deck, write an article using the words ‘deck’, ‘wooden deck’, ‘outdoor deck’, ‘how to build a deck’ and so on. When people search for information online your article may show up and they will click on it to read it - so make the article informative and helpful. Most advertisers pay a small amount for every instance their ad is shown for a certain amount of time (this is called a page view). If the reader of your article actually clicks on the ad, the advertiser will pay you even more.

Publish the articles on writing sites that show ads next to articles and pay you a portion of the page view revenue. Sites like Helium, Triond, Associated Content and many others exist that will pay you a percentage of the money advertisers pay to display ads on their site. Some of these also offer a small one time upfront payment in return for the right to display your article on their site always. In most cases you can keep the rights to your article and can submit to as many sites as you want as long as they have the same non-exclusive agreement.

You can also make money from article writing if you publish your work on certain article sites that allow links back to an affiliate website. An affiliate site is a website on which you sell items for other people, who pay you a commission for every sale you make. In this case, the articles you write and post are designed to convince people that you have a product or service to meet their needs. Readers will click on the link, go to your site and purchase the product - and you earn your commission.

Finally, you can make money from writing articles by setting up your own informational website and publishing your articles yourself as content. This is a bit more work, but if you can set up a good site that draws visitors, you can set up a Google AdSense account and earn money from advertisers directly through Google. This works well if you find a ‘niche’ that not many marketers have built websites about, but that ordinary people are interested in and search for regularly.

When it comes right down to it, if you can write intelligently then article writing is an excellent work from home job. You can use any or all of the tactics mentioned above to make you pre-existing knowledge work for you!
