With the prosper of car shipping companies around, it has become difficult to discern which is the real deal and which is the scam. Some companies may promise lots of benefits and incredibly low rates, but upon the delivery, additional charges will be asked. As with any business transaction, car shipping must have a contract agreed upon by both parties. This protects the owner from any abuse from the company and for the company as well, to avoid being asked for services that are not inclusive in the payment.

The contract is usually done by the company. Some have standard contracts corresponding to different packages or services. However, a contract may be drafted with the owner of the vehicle, especially if he has special requests or wants specific arrangements. Nonetheless, everything that will be set by the company and agreed upon by the owner must be in writing with both parties furnished a copy each.

If the company provides a guarantee as to a defined delivery date, ask for the cost of this guarantee. Estimated pickup and delivery dates may be secured from the company though.

Another document to read well is the insurance policy. Since a lot can happen to your vehicle when transported, it is best to ensure that any arising damage is covered. With the weather and roadside debris that may inflict harm to your car, it is not advisable to believe the company if it assures you of a perfectly safe transport. Secure a copy of the insurance before handing over your car. Since it is possible that your car is insured as well, verify with the transport company if its insurance comes first or second in priority to your car’s existing insurance should any damage arise. You may clarify this matter to your car insurance company as well.

Some people who are moving residences have a tendency to place items inside the car or its trunk in order to avoid hiring companies specialized in moving furniture or appliance. However, this may prove dangerous to your car and to your wallet as well. Most insurance policies of transport companies do not cover the loss of personal items left intentionally or unintentionally inside the car. Overloading the trunk may also cause damage to the car, which the transport company might not consider paying for.
