If you just got your driver’s license, chances are you are dreaming of having your own car. Unfortunately, parents can be wary of allowing teenagers to own and drive an automobile due to the risk associated with it. For example, nearly 5,000 teens between the ages of 16 and 19 die from auto-related accidents every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition, teens are four times more likely than older drivers to be involved in an accident.

With these risk factors taken into consideration, how can you convince your parents to buy a car for you? The key is to earn their trust and prove to them that you are responsible. You can achieve this by adhering to a driving contract and choosing a safe and reliable car.

Make a contract for buying a car and driving responsibly

Sit down with your parents and discuss a driving contract. This contract should outline your specific responsibilities when it comes to the car, from financing to driving and maintenance, such as oil changes and repairs. Also, you should agree on the consequences you will face if you break the terms of the contract, as well as rewards for consistent, safe driving behavior. Both you and your parents should sign and date the contract. Keep it in a place where you can see it every day. This will not only serve as a reminder of your commitment, but also assist in monitoring your results.

One of the most important details to include in the contract is the cost associated with buying a car. Owning an automobile is a big responsibility, and you want to show your parents that you are prepared. Offer to help pay some or all of the following costs: the vehicle down payment, monthly car payments, auto insurance, gas and maintenance costs.

The contract also should focus on driving responsibly. Agree on the times of day you will be allowed to drive, as well as how many passengers you may have in the car. Promise your parents that you won’t drink and drive and you will wear your seat belt, obey posted speed limits and driving laws. Tell them you will avoid common distractions, such as your cell phone and loud music. Of course, it’s important that you not only promise this, but also that you actually follow through on your commitment.

Do your homework before you discuss buying a car

Before you approach your parents about buying a car, do your homework. Utilize resources, such as Consumer Reports magazine, to research car safety ratings for new and used car models, and then compile a list of safe vehicles to review with your parents. In addition, research the Kelley Blue Book value of each car so you understand their current market values. Another factor to consider research is the current state of the automotive industry. Auto manufacturers and dealerships are offering a variety of incentives on both new and used vehicles to make it more affordable for you to turn your dream of owning a car into a reality.

When you’re ready to purchase a car, be sure to keep it and yourself protected with dependable auto insurance from a company you can trust, such as Nationwide Insurance.
