Low blood sugar in pets can be a scary illness for a pet owner to face. If left untreated, this condition can even result in death. It is important to work with a veterinarian to diagnose and treat this condition. However, there are a few things you can do at home to help.

Pets with low blood sugar benefit from several small meals at about the same time everyday. It is important to be constant with their exercise and nap schedules. Serve the right kind of food. The best kind of food for pets with low blood sugar will be something with high in protein, fat and carbohydrate substance. It would also be good to be using clear corn syrup either on the dog’s food or putting it directly on the pet’s gums. Warm your pet up. Often, when your pet had low blood sugar will cause your pet to experience cold chills so keep it warm is important also.

With hypoglycemia it will affect the lack of energy. Glucose, which is sugar, is the fuel the body burns for energy, with out it your pet is lacking energy. Since the brain requires glucose for fuel at every second, it’s possible to induce coma, seizures, brain damage and death by letting blood glucose drop too low. Because the brain is almost totally dependent on glucose to make use of oxygen, it is somewhat like having severe breathing problems. These hypoglycemic episodes will cause the pet to fall over or appear weak.

While high blood sugar is most certainly dangerous, the effects tend to be more long term resulting in conditions such as blindness, neuropathy and kidney disease if left untreated. Hypoglycemia, on the other hand is more immediately life threatening and if levels are too low, every cell in the body becomes starved of life supplying sugars.

Helping manage your pet’s blood sugar, working naturally, without negative side-effects, assisting your pet in maintaining a healthy weight, supporting healthy kidneys, nerves, and eyes, improving blood circulation, all of these are very important for your pet. Most of us love our pets just as if they where one of our kids there health is just as important to you as it was your own.

For animals suffering from diabetes, diet is one of the most important factors. The average life expectancy of diabetic pets is only 2-5 years. Diabetes is a disease that without effective action, it only starts to get worse. Could you imagine only a few more years with your pet? Diabetes does not have to be a death sentence. You can enhance your pet’s life and help them with there health.
