When most people are questioned as to where they would use a rug within their home, the most popular place is in front of the fire, with a close second being used at each side of the bed.

Whilst both of these places are fine, there are other great ways in which rugs can be used in every room of your home! Of course, they are the perfect solution to covering unsightly stains and spills on carpets and flooring, however they have more versatile uses than purely to cover stains.

As you step through your front door a rug is a great way to add both texture and colour to your hallway. If you have a long thin corridor like hallway, which are commonly found in Victorian styled terraced houses, floor runners where common place. A floor runner is basically a long narrow rug which fits perfectly into these types of hallways!

The lounge, front room or sitting room, which ever you refer to your main seating area as, often has a rug which as people's reactions have shown are placed in front of the fire. These are often semi-circular so that they fit closely to the fire hearth, and as the positioning suggests were referred to as hearth rugs! Their point was to protect the flooring from any soot or spitting embers from ruining the flooring, as it was far easier to replace the rug than the entire flooring. They were also positioned in front of the fire so that people could keep their feet warm by the fire.

For the wealthy Chinese rugs were a great way to openly display wealth and world wide adventures. For the poor rugs were often made from strips of old fabrics which were plaited together or strips of fabric pulled through Hessian bags which had been opened up. Both of these were often known as 'rag rugs' as they were made from rags of old clothing. Nowadays the trend of re-cycling has seen a revival in these styles of rugs, with modern designers using old leather belts, men's ties and strips of old denim jeans to re-create rag rugs with a modern twist.

With most modern houses no longer having open fires the dangers and risks of fire are reduced dramatically. It is also no longer necessary to have a semi-circular shaped rug in front of the fire. As such there are a huge variation in the styles and designs of rugs which can be used to enhance the comfort and beauty of your front room.

Dinning areas are also great places to use a rug, traditionally having them placed under the dinning room table, which seems a shame in some ways as the beauty of the rug is covered by the table! However, this popular place is traditionally placed here to again, help protect flooring from spills of food and drinks spoiling the flooring during dining.

The bedroom is a great place to have a rug and whilst more traditionally one is placed either side of a double bed to give a gorgeous soft placed to step onto with bare feet, modern interior designs are placing a large rug under the bottom third of the bed.

Rugs are versatile and a great way to add comfort as well as practical ways to cover stains or protect your flooring! Cheap rugs are ideal for those who have a limited budget and want to add chic style to the rooms of their home.
