To start, take your dog to be examined once a year by a vet. Or if necessary, you may want to have your dog examined even more often.

Just like humans, you need to try to keep your dogs weight within a certain range. To find out this range, you should research your specific dog breed and see what is recommended. But if your dog is overweight, he is more likely to develop many health problems. For instance, joint problems, arthritis, diabetes, and liver malfunctions can all be caused by your dog being overweight.

This next tip is difficult, and I know you don't want to hear this. But, you need to cut down on the amount of treats you give to your dog. Yes, I know it's hard to do this. How can you resist when you see your dogs soulful eyes just begging for a treat? But remember, it's for their own good. In the end, you care more about your dog’s long term health, and giving them too many treats is a bad thing. Stick to feeding your dog only once or twice a day. Also, your children may try to sneak food to the dog. This would be a good time to explain to your children why they should not sneak food to the family dog. Once they understand that it's because of your dog’s health, I'm sure your children will understand.

Also, you will want to make sure that there is always cool, fresh water available. Obviously, your dog staying hydrated is very important. In addition, some older dogs may have problems getting to the water bowl. Perhaps you should take some water right to them, or you can place several different bowls throughout the house. That way, your dog doesn't have to travel very far to get a drink.

Try and take your dog for a walk each day. If you don't have a lot of time, then it can be a short walk. Even a short walk will help with your dog's blood circulation. In addition, this will provide some new sights and smells for your dog and at the same time, giving you quality time with your dog. Just because your dog is older doesn't mean he doesn't still love those walks!

Finally, you might want to switch from dry food to a moist or canned food. Some older dog’s teeth have a hard time with the hardness of dry kibbles. Using a moist or canned food will make it easier for your dog to get the food he needs in him.

Remember, just because your dog is getting older doesn't mean he still doesn't have many years left! Your dog can continue to stay around for years and years, and using these tips is a great way to make this happen. Good luck!
