New parents are excited at the prospect of bringing home a new baby. It is an occasion of great happiness and excitement. At such times the mother has to bear many things in mind. For example, she has to remember that every child has his own sleeping habits. Every new born child will show his own different pattern of schedule of his sleep.

Some babies sleep at night while others sleep at the day time. So, a mother has to create harmony between her own sleeping pattern and the baby’s sleeping pattern. The best thing for a mother is to sleep at the time when the child sleeps. This way she will not be sleep deprived and she can do her domestic works with ease.

Some children sleep at the time when their mothers are awake. They are awake at the time when their mothers must sleep. But mothers have to look after their children. So, they can’t sleep and feel sleep-deprived. This is because while in his mother’s womb a child feels rocked to sleep when mother walks or is engaged in some light work. Even when inside the womb, sometimes their sleeping patterns differ. Therefore even after birth, the mother finds it difficult to adjust and change the sleeping pattern of the child. However, with a little patience and re-scheduling, she can achieve this goal.

A working advice for mothers is that they should start a routine for the sleeping hours as soon as they come from the hospital. It is not a surety that your child will enter into a sleep-routine quickly but still it is good step to take as it will make the child gradually change his sleep-schedule. A mother has to find out an exact time which is suitable for nap and sleep of both the mother and the child.

If you find that the bedtime of your baby is too late and you wish him to go to bed earlier, you can start re-adjusting his time slowly day by day. It is not a process of two days. It may take more time but with patience and steadiness, you can make it. Switch off the lights a few minutes earlier and work in the direction of the stipulated and desired time. This method will definitely help your child in maintaining a bedtime routine and further you can also take enough sleep.

A mother can also try other methods like massaging the child or playing music to lull him to sleep. To make things better for you and your child as far as bedtime routine is concerned you need to find out which method works for you as the best. Just remember that you are not alone in this struggle. Many parents are in it and are trying to adjust their or their child’s sleep pattern so that it suits both parties equally.

It can be an exhausting time to have a new baby and adjusting to parenthood. That is why above all else it is important for new parents to have a strong network of family and friends around them, so that they have the support they need. Often it might become necessary to have the baby looked after by a reliable helper so that the parents an catch up on much needed rest.
