Most people have heard of antibiotics and how you have to take them when you get sick, but how many people know what Probiotics are? They are actually dietary supplements of live yeasts or good bacteria that have been said to be useful and healthy for the body. There is a group of collective microbes and microorganisms that consistently live in the human body and is called Flora. Stress, bad eating, and toxicity are only a few things that destroy this helpful community of microorganisms.

There are at least ten times more bacteria cells in and on the body than regular human cells. There are good and obviously bad bacteria in the body and there must be a balance. Again, all of these microbes make up the Flora of the body. They are found in your mouth, nose, small intestines, on your skin and mainly in your large intestine. The good bacteria in your intestines are there to break down nutrients that the body cannot digest and send them on their way out the colon. However, everyone knows about the bad microorganisms in the colon, E-Coli. The intestinal bacterium also synthesizes vitamins and folic acid. It is important for the good bacteria to remain in the body so it can inhibit the growth of pathogenic germs which can cause disease. 

Many things we come in contact with everyday can destroy the good bacteria in our bodies. This results in the bad bacteria taking over and causing illness and disease. The first destroyer is stress which causes the brain to create chemicals that not only start killing good bacteria but will shut down the immune system as well. Excessive alcohol intake and exposure to toxic substances can also lower the good flora as well. Some major toxic substances people come in contact with and don’t realize the harm it’s doing include Fluoride which destroys the enzymes Flora creates, Mercury and Lead. And even worse, excess iron which allows free radicals to convert healthy cells to cancer cells, contributes to heart disease, and damages the liver and other organs. Smoking, inadequate sleep, overeating, and dehydration are also causes of a loss of good bacteria in the body.
