Affiliate marketing is basically described as an agreement between an online merchant or product seller and an affiliate or publisher. An affiliate gets paid or earns a commission for producing sales, leads or in certain arrangement clicks to a merchant’s website. This arrangement works out great for both parties in that, the merchant gets to advertise his products or services for free to a more widespread market, which will hopefully increase exposure and sales. The merchant’s efforts are put into finding harder working affiliates with good exposure, as the more he has the more sales and money he can potentially make.

By gathering quality affiliates, the merchant saves a lot of time, energy and money finding and selling to different markets and customers. Although the merchant does payout a predefined amount to the affiliate, the marketing work is cut down substantially. A side benefit for the merchant is that the extra exposure gained through affiliate marketing can also create more sales by word of mouth and customer recommendations.

From the affiliates standpoint, anyone that clicks on his affiliate link on his website or blog might go on to purchase the product or service by the merchant and earn the affiliate a percentage of the sale. The key benefit of being an affiliate is that you don't need a product so you don't have to stock inventory, your overhead is very low, you can run your business in your pajamas and best of all, it's usually free to join affiliate programs.

If you were thinking of starting out on the internet to make some extra cash, then affiliate marketing is the place to start. If you follow these 3 easy tips, you could be well on your way to making your first commission on the internet.

Step 1 - Identify what specific niche you would like to promote. It's best to start with something you know about or are passionate about. The reasoning behind this is, the more interested you are with the niche the easier it will be to create your marketing material to help you promote the product. When you're passionate about something you won't get bored writing about it. Once you get comfortable with a niche you have to fine a product to promote. You can find a ton of products at the most popular affiliate resources, like ClickBank Marketplace, AssociatePrograms.com, LinkShare.com, CJ.com etc.

Step 2 - Try and find good paying merchants and high converting products, most affiliate programs sources will have that information readily available. Create a list of good paying and high converting affiliate programs for your chosen niche and create a website or blog. When choosing a product keep in mind that an affiliate program that pays a recurring monthly payout will keep paying you over and over again for the same amount of work it takes to make a one time sale. You must also consider the affiliate support they are giving, including Marketing materials which may include articles, text links, banner ads, classified ads, reports, etc.

Step 3 - Once you have your niche and product ready, it's time to create your website or blog. Now you can do this with a free blog or even with a Squidoo page for free both work fine but I highly recommend that you get your own domain name with reliable hosting. If you don't have the experience to build a website you can create a Worpress blog very easily with hosting that has Cpanel and Fantastico. Once that's in place, you have to start promoting your site, now there's so many ways in which you can do this but the easiest to start is through forum marketing. Find forum's in your niche, sign up and create your profile with your website link in your signature file. Participate in the discussions and once people see that you know your stuff they’ll see you as an expert in your niche and follow your link. Use this as your primary methods and keep learning different marketing methods through reading books, courses or other articles online about the best and proven advertising techniques and add them to your forum marketing.

Remember, there is no quick way to success. Affiliate marketing may seem very tempting due to numerous encouraging testimonies of merchants and affiliate marketers who have made a living with it, but it really does require a great deal of hard work and persistence. You also need to be creative and determined to succeed. Most new affiliate marketers don’t understand this, so when the sales don't start right away, they stop and look for other programs and repeat the same mistake over and over.

Stay focused on your website, niche and product, work at making it bring in some money then optimize it by adding some other means of monetization. Once it's producing income you can keep evolving it and start another campaign and repeat your steps over again, before you know it you'll have a nice little income being generated and you'll be on your way to succeeding in affiliate marketing like the big boys.
