Why Our Bone’s Need Calcium

Weakened bones are a condition of Osteoporosis that results to a loss of bone density. Loss of calcium and bone tissue is the cause of lower bone density resulting in bones that fracture or break much easier.

Our bones are calcified connective tissue structured the major portion of the skeleton of most vertebrates. There are about 206 bones in our body. They hold more calcium than any other organ in our body. They begin to develop before birth. When the skeleton first forms, it is made of flexible cartilage, but within a few weeks it begins the process of ossification. Ossification is a process where cartilage is replaced by hard deposits of calcium phosphate and stretchy collagen. It takes about 20 years for ossification to be completed.

Your bones are made of a lot of different things such as protein, minerals, and vitamins. The minerals that present in the bones are calcium, potassium, manganese, magnesium, silica, iron, zinc, selenium, boron, phosphorus, sulfur, chromium, and dozens of others. In order for bones to absorb the minerals, vitamin D must be present in the diet.

Alone in the U.S., there is 10 million Americans that have osteoporosis and millions more have low bone density. Even though the most common symptoms are breaks or fractures of the hip, spine or wrist there are other signs. Height loss, spinal curvature or back pain can all be signs of osteoporosis.

Density is the amount of done present in the skeletal structure. The higher your density is the stronger are your bones. It’s known for men to have higher density than women. After age 35, both men and women will usually lose 0.3% to 0.5% of their bone density per year as part of the aging process.

Bone diseases might come in different names. But basically, they all involve the break down or weakening of the bone tissues in the body. There are all kinds of bone disease such as avascular necrosis, back and neck pain, degenerative spinal disorders, osteoarthritis, osteochondroma, and a lot more.

They also weaken if they aren’t worked. For people who are sedentary or have a condition like paralysis or muscular dystrophy, density loss happens quickly. You can rebuild your loss of density by doing some gentle weight training exercise that way your only putting gentle stress on your bones.

Without calcium, you can’t rebuild new bone during the lifelong process of bone remodeling. You need a constant level of calcium in your blood since many of your organs, mainly your heart, muscles, and nerves, depend on calcium. When these organs command calcium, they’ll steal it from the mineral storage in your bones. Over time, as you run down the mineral tank in your bones, you end up with think, brittle, breaking bones.
