Dog coats provide protection against foreign elements and extreme weather conditions. It is most important to wear during the winter season.

Dog Coats

A dog coat is a garment or covering made to protect dogs from the cold weather and against various external elements. It is also used to shield the pelage of show dogs if the fleece or wool is judged. The alpaca fleece dog coat is sent to agricultural shows wherein the most desirable is to have a coat free from debris and dirt.

This kind of dog clothing is used as fashion accessories also, keeping the dog clean, warm, and secure. A coat can be waterproof in order to keep the dog dry and warm during wet weather. Some can also be turned out to give extra warmth for your dog. The small breeds like a poodle need to be protected from very cold temperatures. You can also use dog booties along with your dog coat to prevent forming ice balls between your pet’s toes.

Types of Dog Coats

There are different types of dog coats because each breed is shaped differently. Below are common types of dog coat for every dog breed.

Basset Hound Coats
Stores that offer dog coats have designed a specially cut coat perfect for the unique body type of basset hounds. These dog coats have a long body as well as an adjustable velcro in the neck. These coats are available in all kinds of designs and colors. Common sizes are 20 and 22 inches. Some popular basset dog coats are Snugller and Nylon Turnout.

Dachshund Coats
Kinds like these have doxie cuts and the normal cuts. They have shorter girth or width built especially for dogs with short legs. These doxie coats also fit other dog breeds such as maltese, bichon, shih tzu, jack russell short leg, lhasa apso, corgi narrow body, and peke. Normal cut coats are exclusively for dachshunds. Sizes are 10,12,13,14, 16, and 18 inches. Popular styles are snuggler, plaid turnout, and nylon turnout. These coats come in assorted colors.

Great Dane Coats
These coats are especially designed for Great Danes. It has a much longer body length than that of normal dog coats. They are designed to have smaller necks in order to fit the dog perfectly. Popular coat styles are snuggler and nylon turnout. Colors are available in black, green, and red. Sizes range from 32 to 34 inches.

How to Measure your Dog

A dog’s coat size is measured from the base of the neck up to the base of the tail. Be sure that your dog is standing squarely on the ground with its head up to get an accurate measurement. Measure the dog from the base of the neck up to the end of the body while your dog is relaxed and looking ahead. It is better to order in even sizes that range from 8 inches to 28 inches. The size 13 inches is the only exception to this rule. If the tail of your dog goes up, round down. Also, if your dog’s tail goes up, round up.

Star Styles and Dog Coats

There are various styles for dog coats. Among the popular ones are fleece dog coats. If you want to add style for your pet’s dog coat, it is best to let a tailor do the work for you. This will also give you free reign in choosing the fabric, colors, and exact size for your dog.
