It is seen all the time on the news and in the newspapers that employees are getting injured at work and many employees worry about workplace safety on a daily basis. There are a number of steps that employers can take though that will increase the chance of ensuring employee safety. And it isn't only about the workplace itself but communication, respect, and appreciation as well. You would actually be surprised at how far a little respect can go in the work place. Here are just a few basic principals that will turn your workplace safer for you and your valued employees.

The first and most important principal in keeping your work place safe is good communication. Your employees should know what you expect out of them and should easily be able to communicate with you about those expectations. Remember the saying “there is no such thing as a bad question,” well this is true in so many ways. Your employees should always feel comfortable asking questions about your safety policies and the reasons behind them without worrying about repercussions.

The next important principle regarding safety in the workplace is cleanliness. Employees should be taught exactly how to keep their work station clean as well as any other areas they may be responsible for, such as the bathroom or the break room. Cluttered and dirty work areas are one of the most common causes of injury in the work place and can easily be avoided. It also helps if employers and supervisors teach cleaning habits by example. Once your employees get used to keeping their work areas a certain way it will be easy to prevent accidents caused by untidy work stations.

Respect is an important principal in the work place as well. Employers should make employees understand that they care about their safety not just themselves and the repercussions they would have to deal with if an employee gets hurt. No employer wishes to see their employee get hurt but often the focus is on what will happen if they do get hurt. This can cause a bit of resentment toward the employer and may cause the employee to care less about the companies safety practices.

Finally, one of the most important work safety principals is machinery repair. Some of the worst workplace accidents are not even the employees fault but caused by machinery that needs to be repaired. Maintenance checks should be done on a constant routine basis in order to ensure that everything is always running properly. Even the simplest machines can cause injury if not properly tended to.

As long as you as an employer follows these few simple guidelines and as long as you make your employees aware of your safety guidelines you should have little trouble keeping your workplace safe for you and your employees. It may seem like a hassle to constantly be reminding everyone of safe practices but the consequences and the hassle that you would have to deal alternatively would be much worse so why not prevent those situations from occurring to begin with?
