If you get into an accident, don't worry, it's not the end of the world. However, it can certainly turn what would have been a fairly good day upside down. If you find yourself involved in a vehicular accident with another vehicle (or goodness forbid) a pedestrian, it is extremely important that you remain absolutely calm. The first thing you are going to want to do is make sure that there isn't anyone hurt. If you aren't hurt, it is ok to get out of your car and make sure that the other person or persons involved are not injured.

In some cases when you get into an accident with someone else, the other party might be hostile. If this is the situation, remain calm and stay in your vehicle. Regardless of the type of accident that you are involved in or even if the other person or persons are absolutely calm and friendly, it is always best to contact the local police so that an accident report can be filed for insurance purposes. Most insurance companies nowadays require that there be a written accident report filed by police. In that situation, the job of the police officer is to act as an unbiased third party that reports the details of the accident scene as he or she sees it. If there are witnesses, then the police will interview these witnesses so as to add information to the report. In a lot of cases and depending on what state you live in, the insurance companies may find fault in both of the drivers (if there are two or more vehicles involved). This is sometimes referred to as “contributory negligence”. You will want to contact your insurance company to find out if this is the case. Not that you would ever want to get into an accident, but it is still good to know ahead of time (should you find yourself involved in a vehicular accident) what the rules and regulations are.

When you get into an accident, the police officer will also take note of how many passengers you have in your vehicle as well as their names and ages (and license information if they have a drivers license or ID). Again, this is all for the accident report. You can obtain a copy of your accident report by going down to the main station of your police department, or in some cases, a copy of your police report can be mailed to you. You just have to check with your local police department to see what their protocol is.

Accidents usually mean higher insurance rates for all parties involved because it is showing that you are a higher risk to insure (hence the higher price). Usually, after a while, you will begin to see your insurance rate go down (provided that you don't become involved in any more vehicular accidents). The best prevention for accidents is to be vigilant while driving. This means turning off all cellular devices, putting away reading materials such as maps, magazines or directions and focusing 100 percent of your attention on the road. If you need to put on makeup, look at directions or have a cell phone conversation, do it before you get into your car or pull off to the side of the road. While we may all think that we are masters of multitasking at times, the reality is that we are not. Even if you are a great driver, great drivers can become distracted and not drive as defensively as they should when on the highway or in residential areas. Stay alert. Stay focused, and stay out of accidents.
