The golf approach shot is generally anything from 100 or so yards and should be your final shot to the green. This is where you want to get 'up and down' in as few shots as possible. Unfortunately for some this happens less often than they would like. Lets take a look at what you can do to master the approach shot.

If you still have 50 - 100 yards to go its vital that you take into account what is going on at the green. Too many golfers try and hit the pin without having any regard for the traps lying in wait. Pin position is the golf course designers way of having a bit of fun with you. Why else would they tuck it back left behind a deep bunker? It makes no sense to go at the pin in this scenario as the risks are too high. Its good practice to aim for the middle of the green unless you are feeling particularly confident or just crazy that day. After all a 20 yard putt is better than taking on a bunker any day of the week.

If you're outside of the wedges then consider taking a golf club more than you think you need - its remarkable how many people think they hit the golf ball further than they actually do. If you regularly come up short then this could be you!

Know your wedge distances. Practice on the range with a solid golf swing - don’t go at it with everything you've got. When you know your distances with this type of swing you'll really be able to judge your shots. Experiment with grip position - moving hands down the grip reduces distance.

Do not grip the golf club too hard. For some reason I see many golfers grip harder when they get near the green thinking this gives them more control. No-one said golf was logical! Ease off and you will find a better touch with your shots.

A slightly open stance is preferable the nearer to the green you are. Ball position should be centred. Think downward blow to take advantage of the loft of the golf club - lean slightly to the left for this.

Then ensure you have 'quiet' wrists - try not to hinge them too much on the back swing. This actually generates too much power which can result in an over hit or too much spin on the green.

Concentrate on a smooth and solid golf swing through the ball. Let the club do the work - don’t try and force it through to get distance. The nearer you are to the green the less backswing you need. If your body is facing the target after the swing then you should be hitting nice golf shots.

Practice chipping around the greens. Have an open stance, use a pendulum like swing leading with your shoulders. Use lower lofted clubs the nearer the fringe you are - you want less flight and more roll.

When you are in this kind of range it takes a little bit of intelligence to avoid the sucker play pin positions and the development of nice touch. Forget power, this is the other side to the game of golf that needs just as much work as blasting the golf ball down the fairway.
