Learning to play guitar used to mean taking private lessons once a week or struggling to understand if you're teaching yourself correctly with a beginner guitar book. Today things are a lot easier. There's still those teach yourself guitar books and lots of guitar teachers if you want to take private lessons, but instructional videos on dvd and online are becoming the most used method.

The benefits of learning to play guitar using a dvd are big. It's less expensive, you're not stuck on a schedule each week of when your lesson is and truthfully you'll learn more faster.

Cost

The average guitar teacher charges about $15 bucks a lesson. Most students will take one lesson a week for a whole year. That's $780 a year! What does a home study guitar course cost? A good one will probably run you $200 or so. That will give a beginner a year or more worth of lessons. The upfront cost is a lot more with the dvd series but when you compare the annual cost it's more then three times as much to take private lessons.

Time

If you're a teenager taking guitar lessons you probably don't have a lot of other responsibilities. Ensuring you have between 7 PM and 8 PM free every Tuesday night isn't a big deal. If you're an adult, married and possibly children it's an entirely different story. Ensuring you have that one hour free every Tuesday night isn't always possible so you end up falling behind in your lessons.

When you opt to use a guitar lessons dvd to learn guitar you don't have any time restrictions. You can watch one lesson a week, every two weeks even once a month. You can also easily refer back to previous lessons if you need to refresh your memory on a particular topic.

Learn Faster

Something I've found from taking private guitar lessons is each teacher has a different style and they don't always follow a particular lesson plan. You don't always learn skills in the correct order which often requires you to go back or ahead and learn something else.

Videos almost always teach things in the correct order. The instructor in the video has likely taught private lessons as some point so they know the best order to teach techniques to a beginner guitar player. You benefit from this because the lessons follow a logical order that teaches you things faster and doesn't require you to go back and fourth.

If you're like many music lovers who have always wished they learned to play the guitar you still can. Even if you lead a very busy lifestyle you can pick away at teaching yourself the guitar from videos much easier then you could taking private lessons. Home study is the most effective method to become a great guitar player even if you've never picked up a guitar before.
