When you are traveling for business, you are there for specific reasons; business. It could be that you are meeting with clients, or attending your company’s annual sales meeting. Whatever the reason, if you are traveling, its likely that your destination is somewhere you spend little time in.

People who travel for business may get to go to some pretty amazing places; places that they would never get the opportunity to see otherwise. Even though you are traveling for work, there’s no reason not to take in the sites of the cities you are visiting. You may never be in that place again.

Business trips don’t have to be business only. At the end of the day, your time is still your time and you should take in some of the local flavor, attractions and hot spots as part of your visit to an area. Before you embark on your journey, you should do a quick Internet search on local attractions. If you are traveling to a smaller town, your client or co-workers can be the best resource of where to go and what to see. People love showing off their hometowns, so definitely ask around.

You might even be able to arrange a night out with the company or co-workers you are visiting. Whether its happy hour at their favorite pub, or dinner somewhere with signature cuisine, I’m sure you will be able to find an ample tour guide. Offer to buy dinner; a free meal will peak just about anyone’s interest.

If you are in a new city or destination, don’t be afraid of being a tourist. The fact is, if you are there for the first time, you are indeed a tourist. Take advantage of any tourist attractions, and don’t be afraid to ask the concierge where the fun spots are. Memories are so valuable and you wouldn’t want to miss a thing. Besides, after a hard day’s work, you deserve it!

The best business trips are ones that fall on a weekend. If your meetings are scheduled for first thing Monday morning, arrive a few days early and enjoy the local events and attractions. Business travel is quirky; sometimes its cheaper to fly in before the weekend and most businesses would rather pay for two nights in a hotel, than higher airline fares. Even if you pay for your own rental car for the weekend, it would certainly be worth having the freedom to roam about the city.

If you do have a few days to get out and explore, take a drive out of town; travel a bit to take in the sites that are not that far away. On the east coast, a trip up Highway One will move you through some of the most beautiful New England towns you can imagine. And if you linger a while, you can take in a whale watching tour if you want to.

Take advantage of your business travels to see the world. Have some fun and as the song says “stop and smell the roses along the way”. By doing this, you won’t feel like you worked yourself to death, and you’ll fly away with the most amazing once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
