You never know when a great opportunity for a new job will come along, so you don’t want to find your self in a panic trying to locate all of the new information to be added to an old resume. Whether you are unemployed and living in tough economic times, considering looking for a new job, or are worried about being laid off, it is important to keep your resume updated. Missing out on a great job opportunity can be a devastating experience.

It is essential to make sure you are ready for unexpected events that may result in losing your job. Companies will often make cutbacks in order to maintain profitability. This can involve massive layoffs. You should be ready by updating your resume when you have acquired new skills, obtained education achievements such as a degree, diploma, or certificate, acquired new job duties, or earned a promotion. Keeping these details up-to-date will ensure that you do not have to figure out the dates you achieved your accomplishments. As well, people will often forget some things they have achieved. Keeping your information well-organized by maintaining an accurate account of awards and certificates of achievement earned within the workplace and in the community will enable you to quickly start looking for a new job. If you know you will be laid off soon, a current resume will allow you to start looking for a new job while you are still employed.

If you find yourself at certain place in life where you are considering embarking on a new career, an updated resume that focuses on the skills acquired for the career will help you assess what you are lacking so that you can put a strategy together on how to acquire the necessary skills and experience to get the job. You can transfer existing skills to an updated resume that are relevant to the new career. When listing your accomplishments, make sure you list the accomplishments you achieved in your current job Technical skills should also be included in your list. If you are unhappy with your current job and are planning on quitting, it may be a wise decision to have an updated resume to send out before you actually quit.

A well-written resume makes all the difference in securing a new job. Make sure you list only those skills that are most relevant to the job in which you are applying. An employer only wants to see what is relevant to the position that you are seeking. Include any training sessions, work shops and conferences that you attended. As well, note any continuing education programs that you completed. Other accomplishments that should be noted are public speaking and leadership skills that you have acquired while working at your previous or current job.

A resume is your best tool to finding a better job. When updating your resume, consider changing the format to give it a more professional appearance. It is recommended that one updates his or her resume each year, unless there are impending layoffs. Neglecting to update your resume can result in missing out on great job opportunities. Having an updated resume can open the door to a satisfying and lucrative new career.
