Contrary to popular belief, the game of no limit Texas Hold’em is not a game of 100$ luck. There is absolutely skill involved and this article will show you show that skill comes into play when trapping a player and winning his entire stack of chips, whether it be in a cash game or in a tournament structure. One skill that is important to the art of trapping is the ability to read players. Knowing who the aggressive players at your table are and how they differ from the passive players is critical to knowing how to best trap each of them.

Trapping an aggressive no limit Texas Hold’em player at your table can certainly be very lucrative when setup and executed properly. Unfortunately, even the most seasoned veterans of the game sometimes do not know how to set up the traps effectively. Not knowing how to trap or worse yet, trapping incorrectly can result in reduced winnings or even trapping yourself! Do that and you can lose your whole stack to the person you are trying to trap.

What does setting the trap mean? Simply stated, setting a trap in no limit Texas Hold’em means slow playing a monster hand in the hopes that your opponent makes an awesome second-best hand while believing he has the absolute best hand. For example, I love to enter into pots with any pocket pair, especially if there is a smallish raise before me. If I am lucky enough to hit my set, I am in great shape, especially if my opponent raised with something like Ace-King and then hit his Ace on the flop while I hit my set. When this happens, I usually clean up.

I’ll take you through an example Texas Hold’em hand. In this hand, I am last to act. Cards are dealt and I am dealt pocket deuces. My opponent is first to act and is dealt pocket Aces. He raises three times the big blind preflop. Everyone else folds except me. I call his raise.

The flop brings 2-7-J and my opponent bets out the size of the pot and I call. At this point, he thinks I’m on a draw since two spades came down on the flop. The turn is a King and he again bets the size of the pot. I now set the trap and raise him all-in. I do this to make him think I have something like Ace-King and that I just hit my King on the turn. If he believes me, he will call my raise every time, thinking he has me crushed. In this example, he does exactly that.

After calling my all-in raise, we both turn over our cards with just the river to come. He shows pocket Aces and tells me he has my Kings beat. I chuckle as I turn over pocket deuces to show the set. The river brings an eight and I take down a massive pot.

As I stated earlier, knowing how to trap in no limit Texas Hold’em can be very lucrative if setup correctly!
