Conserving gasoline in today's economy is much more difficult than you think. Depending on the area that you live in as well as how much traffic is in the area, you could easily spend a half a tank of gas getting from your house or dwelling space to ten miles down the street and back over the course of just a few days!

Many of us do and say things that we are ashamed or embarrassed of, but nowhere is this more pertinent than when it comes to purchasing a car. Most people purchase a vehicle with the thinking that it will “look” a certain way or express some sort of status symbol to others. However, there are many hidden costs when it comes to owning a car, and nowhere else is this more apparent than when it comes to filling up the gas tank. Over the last few months, I have been documenting how much money I spend at the pump on gasoline. You see, when I first bought my car (which is a Jeep), I neglected to take into account the fact that it would probably guzzle a significant portion of gasoline. Now, unfortunately, it is too late to turn back the clock and thus, I simply have to be as careful as I can when it comes to spending money on filling up my tank.

Some of the ways that you can conserve gasoline begin with the simplest things- things that you do every day. For instance, how often do you go out during the day? Do you find that you are constantly in food stores or shopping at the mall? When it comes to gasoline, the littlest trips can turn into big expenses down the road if you are not careful. Therefore, when you do your shopping, try to do in such a way that you only go out once. An example of what I'm talking about would look something like the following: You need to get grocery shopping done, you have to go to the post office and you need to stop by the doctor's office to pay a bill. Begin by going to the doctor's office to pay the bill, stop by the post office and then finish up with the food shopping. Additionally, it helps if you try to lump all your errands together based on proximity to on another. If your doctor's office is located all the way on the other side of town, you may want to do your food shopping there as well if you can.

Another thing to be aware of when trying to conserve gasoline is how much stuff is cluttering up your vehicle. Believe it or not, the more weight your vehicle has to carry around, the harder the engine has to work in order to propel it forward, thereby using up more gasoline in the process. There is also another reason that you should strive to keep your car free of clutter and that is in order to prevent theft from occurring. Often times, thieves will seek out vehicles that have something of interest inside. As a general rule of thumb, if you must keep items in your car, make sure that they are out of sight. If you have to, a worse case scenario would be to throw an old blanket over items that you want to keep out of view.
