Ah, the dreaded job interview. So many people become hung up over job interviews and having to go to them, that it takes away from the excitement as well as the chance to showcase why you should be hired in the first place. For some people, job interviews are exciting; but for most, job interviews are a superficial meeting between you and a potential employer to see whether or not you will be able to earn a living by working for them.

There are a few things that one should remember about job interviews. One of the first things that you will want to be mindful of is the fact that you should dress the part. Don't ever walk into a job interview wearing a pair of cutoff jeans and a tube top. You would think that most people know this, but you would be surprised. How you dress, of course, will also be determined by the type of job that you are applying to. Obviously, if you are applying to be a dancer, you will wear something entirely different from a person who is applying for a professional position as a paralegal, etc.

When you land an interview with an employer (which seems to be a rarity nowadays given the current economic situation), you should always make it a point to arrive early because first impressions are lasting ones. Plus, let's face it- no employer is going to want to hire someone who has at least a million excuses as to why he or she was late to work. Working shouldn't be stressful, but often times, people make it more stressful than it needs to be. Typically, there is a fairly simple formula for working any job. It involves getting to work on time, doing all of the work assigned, being polite and doing a fairly decent enough job so that your employer doesn't look to replace you. It's sad, but this is often the case with many jobs. At the end of the day, everyone wants to get paid because people want to be able to live the American dream of owning a piece of property, maybe having a car and possibly traveling and having a family. Unfortunately, much of this is contingent upon how much of your paycheck you are actually taking home after taxes and bills, etc.

When you get to the interview, you will want to shake the hand of your employer and look them in the eyes. Lack of eye contact often indicates that you are not paying attention or that you are trying to hide something-although in every culture, it is different. Have an extra copy of your resume or Cv in hand so that you can refer to it for clarification items or questions that your interviewer may have. Wear presentable clothing. For a man, this may be a pair of khakis and a polo shirt or a suit sans tie (depending on the interview situation) while for a woman, it will almost always mean a pair of dress pants with a nice top and/or a tasteful skirt with a dress top and possibly some kind of cardigan or blazer. For the ladies, you may want to also consider wearing stockings and closed toe heels/shoes.

It is important to remember that throughout the interview process, first impressions are often lasting ones. At the least, you want your employer to remember the way that you looked in the interview because later, when your potential employer is going through a pile of resumes for people that he or she interviewed, they'll remember your face much better as “that lovely young lady who was dressed so nicely and was so personable”.
