A newborn brings much excitement and joy to your home, but can also bring your finely tuned family schedule grinding to a halt. Once your new baby is home, cooking may fall to the bottom of the list of priorities. There are some things you can do to help you and your family ease into the new timetable you will have once your newest member has arrived.

Try to be as prepared as possible before your baby is born. Start about two weeks before your due date and plan out meals with your spouse or another family member. Consider meals such as casseroles which can be easily frozen and used whenever needed. Most items can be stored in the freezer for at least a month if you cover them and contain them such that they do not get freezer burn. If you plan ahead, try to put these meals in microwave safe containers so you can reheat them even faster than a standard oven.

If you cannot prepare your own meals, there are many brands of frozen prepared meals which can help you in a pinch as well. Many of these meals have great flavors and good nutrition as well. You can spruce up a frozen meal with fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, or a loaf of bread to help make these meals more appealing.

Canned foods can also help when you need a quick meal for your family. Canned soups, stews, and pasta can be complemented with a quick tossed salad to add nutrition and variety. Consider the boxed pasta meals as well. And for dessert, you can add some fresh fruit such as oranges or bananas, or even chilled canned fruit cocktail.

Our family likes days when we mix up our meals. So some days we have breakfast for dinner! Eggs, omelets, pancakes, or French toast can all make a fun evening meal for a change of pace. Another meal to consider in the evening is lunch. A sandwich of turkey and cheese with lettuce and tomato on wheat bread and a glass of cold milk can be a quick meal anyone can enjoy. Add some grapes or other fruit for dessert and you have not only fed your family but included all the food groups as well!

You can order out if your budget allows. This option may be an easier alternative for feeding your family if it has been a particularly stressful day. A meal out can be something your family looks forward to once or twice a month. Even if you only go out to eat once a month, the change of scenery will be enjoyable to everyone. And the clean up from eating in a restaurant is quite easy!

With a little thought, preparation, and help from other family members, there are ways of feeding you family while also making your cooking duties lighter. And when you share the household duties you can spend more time enjoying your new baby and your family and less time worrying about chores.
