So you’ve lost your job, have no money, and have self-diagnosed about three ulcers. It’s okay. We might not be able to hire you, but we can help you get things in perspective and make those ulcers disappear. It’s not a magic pill or even a great secret; in fact, it’s as old as the alphabet. If you’re going through a hard time, write about it. This is one instance when having bad things happen can come in handy. The worse your experiences, the more stories you’ll have to tell. Just in case you’re busy thinking up excuses about why you can’t write we’ve come up with a few rebuttals.

I’m not a writer
Guess what? A lot of self-proclaimed writers really aren’t writers either. They may delight in telling every one from the 7-11 clerk to that cute guy at the bar about their literary aspirations but if they don’t actually sit down and put pen to paper (no, doodling doesn’t count) then they’re not really writers either. All you have to do to be a writer is to actually write. You might not be a great writer but, hey, you’ll never know until you try. And, if you’re that bad, you can always hire an editor. If you need more convincing go to an airport bookstore and look around. You’ll find bad writing at it’s finest.

I have no money
Lost your job? Fighting with the unemployment office? Trying to trade your food stamps for a six-pack? It’s ok. You can be poor and still write. All you need to be a writer is a pen and some paper. If you can’t afford a notebook we guarantee that if you have one friend who works in an office he or she can supply with you enough blank paper and writing utensils for life. And, in a way, you’re lucky—you have plenty of time to write your masterpiece.

I’m a positive, happy person
Good for you. We’re positive happy people too. But we also understand that all good writing needs conflict. Do you seriously want to read anything about someone skipping happily through life and have nothing happen to her? We’re nice people and we still wish she’d trip over a tree root or fall in a pothole. Conflict doesn’t necessarily mean negative. You can have fantastic inner conflict just deciding what to wear in the morning.

I have nothing to write about
Everyone has a story. We have yet to meet anyone who has nothing to write about. You could live in a cave eating nothing but gooseberries and still have something to write about. Not only could you write a treatise on solitude, you could write a cave decorating book or the definitive guide to gooseberries, you could write about how you ended up in this cave and more importantly, why you stayed. Are you sensing a theme? You got it, mine your own life for things to write about. Still having trouble? Start with “I remember” and then list everything that you remember as far back as you can go. We promise that at least one of those memories will make a great story.
