A scarf is a piece of fabric worn on or near the head or around the neck for fashion, warmth, cleanliness, or for religious reasons. People wearing them for many purposes like members of the Scouting Movement wear scarves as part of their uniform, with different colours and logos to represent their scout group and students in the United Kingdom traditionally wear academic scarves with distinctive combinations of striped colours identifying their individual college or university. Depending on its use, scarves can come in many different shapes and sizes. There are even oblong scarves or rectangular, triangular scarves aside from the traditional square scarves.

Square scarfs... A lot of students in the United States have to deal with the reality of harsh winters. This entails a variety of winter clothing to protect them from the cold. Nowadays however, the variety of winter clothing styles has been growing rapidly. An accessory that is becoming more and more popular is the scarf. In fact, a lot of students have experimented with different ways to wear them.

For preppy students, they usually opt for scarves that are made out of wool and come in simple colors such as green, brown and black. With minimal designs such as an emblem or even just a few checkered patterns, preppy students prefer simplicity over flashy looks. Since they often wear khaki pants and button-down long sleeved shirts, it is more appropriate to wear an accessory that is toned down.

On the other hand, for hipster students, they usually wear scarves that have quirky designs and attract attention. They aren’t afraid to express themselves by wearing clothes that are over the top and are in tune with their personality. So if you see a hipster wearing red skinny jeans and a striped tank top paired with a ruffled accessory, don’t be surprised.

Moreover, the sophisticated students are probably the best examples for classic style. They wear square scarves with such finesse and confidence that they make seem like they have worn one every single day of their lives. All their clothes are neatly pressed and tucked to the smallest detail. Usually, you will see them wearing a coat and silk tie paired with a silk or wool accessory.

And lastly, there are the beatnik students who wear them simply because they want to express their bohemian way of life. Usually, they receive them as gifts from friends who sew or weave them and place a certain meaning to them as well. They wear them simply because they want to give honor to their friends who gave it to them as a gift.

Basically, you will notice that the different cliques in universities have their own way of wearing this kind of accessory. At the same time, there are also various styles that appeal to the varying groups as well. Bottom line is that it has progressively become a favorite fashion item among university students.

This goes to show how far this accessory has come along. Nevertheless, there is no doubt it is making everyone look a lot more hip and chic.
