As a pianist, can you consider to yourself that you are improving? If you do so, you should be happy about it. Having the thought that you show improvements in your piano lessons will help you get by the tough practice and piano topics. For you to be able to get through it, you need to know the practice habits that will help you along the process of learning.

There are things that will direct you to become a better pianist as you practice. Have a glimpse on this matters that will deter you in your advancement.

1. You don’t foresee yourself as a good pianist in the future. It will make things hard for you to become a better pianist since you don’t know how to select which type of exercises will improve your skills. If your goals are quite unclear, it will be hard to prioritize things during practice sessions.

2. You don’t spend enough time for practice or doing your assignments that will aid you in remembering important topics. Though it is somehow helpful to search for piano sheet music online and play some notes you will not improve as a pianist.

3. You play hard pieces that are beyond your capacity. This will definitely deter you in your learning progress. It is great to have your favorite pianist as a source of inspiration. Just be aware that you are not yet at their level yet and you have a long way to go.

4. It is important to practice proper hand exercises as well as good posture. Having poor hand and body posture can make piano playing hard.

5. You start to play at a tempo that is beyond your skills. It is reasonable because every pianist wants to see certain improvements. On the other hand, it will also deter your progress if you play very quick.

6. You do your practice but you forget the reason of doing it – your love for music. If you do so, you will be losing your interest on the piano not for long.

7. You don’t know how to play the complete piece perfectly. All you do is practice playing bits and pieces of a song. That’s why, when your friends come to listen to your play, you won’t have anything to present to them.

After reading all those things, here are some ways on how you can avoid those hindrances and make practice and rehearsals effectual, fast and even enjoyable:

1. Allow yourself to have more time on thinking about your piano playing. Assess things like why you want to play piano, what do you like most about piano playing, the kind of piano player you want to be, as well as your flaws that deters you on your goals. It is good if you also make a list of your goals one at a time and use them as inspiration in your piano playing.

This will make it simple to assess how well you have improved. The goals will guide you unto the right path. This will make things understandable and will enhance your skills to become a good pianist.

2. If you have selected some piano songs and exercises, make sure that you will spend more time to really master the techniques. It will be of great help in learning future complex pieces that you want to learn. Don’t only memorize, you must know things by heart in order make your knowledge and skills last.

3. Make sure that you choose pieces and exercises that is just right for you, not beyond your capacity. This will make learning boring and it takes a lot of time to master it.

4. Having proper hand exercises and posture will enable you to make the most of your piano practice. You will also avoid muscle straining since you do it correctly. It will make piano playing a very wonderful experience.

5. As we all know, learning the piano takes time so do not be in a hurry. You are not on a race anyway, so just take it slow. If you hurry on things, you might do it in a wrong way and develop bad habits on the piano. Doing your practice slowly but surely will minimize stress and you will be relaxed as you play. You can enjoy playing if you are free from stress.

6. Have the heart in taking time to listen to the pieces being played. Dedicate a bit of your time in digesting all the music language and expressions that you heard from good musicians. Not for long, you will be able to apply it and make your own good music.

7. It is a very good thing to master a lot of musical pieces that you can play in front of your friends and family. Your loved ones are the ones that have given you support on your piano playing activity so it is just right to dedicate it to them. Mastering many music pieces should be an important part of your piano practice.
