“Break one nine for a copy c’mon!”

Well my mind was just wandering back to the 70`s and early 80`s and just thinking about all the fun we used to have on CB Radio. CB Radio what’s that? I hear you cry, well basically it’s a two way radio (receive and transmit) that’s legal to be used by the general public, without a license.

For sure it was not always the case that they were legal, back in the 70`s a few people use to import them from the USA, and they were AM sets, not like the legal ones today. But hey maybe that was half the fun I don’t know, I vividly remember getting this Sharp 40 Channel Remote CB Radio, all excited and could not wait to get it installed in my car. My mind recalls even now fitting it in the car. Being a remote rig it was a little different in that the controls were on the microphone, channel change up and down, volume etc... So anyway I fitted this thing in the car all tucked under the dash in the removable lining that could be pulled down where I used to tuck the microphone when needing to be discreet. The Antenna of choice at that time as I recall was a DV27 it looked like the small fibreglass whips that some used for their car radios. Then out with the SWR Meter to set up and tune the thing, then all ready to go.

Anyway that was me off driving here and there trying to find some one to do a rig check with, thinking I was well disguised and that no one would ever realise I had a rig in the car (no one that mattered anyway ). Looking back on those times now it really was so easy to spot when a car or truck had a CB Radio on board, so I guess if they really wanted it stopped then it would have been soon accomplished.

Where I lived at the time was way out in the country in deepest West Cornwall, it was not always easy to find someone to copy (chat to) think that was half the fun to at times although it could be really frustrating sometimes. The people I got to know through CB Radio were many and varied, and many friendships were made and even continue to this day.

The Handles (CB Nicknames) were something else. There was Big Daddy, Boss Hogg, Miss Piggy, The Advertiser, G Force, Wildcat, Night Owl; The Violator There was even a Worzel Gummidge and many many more such names that escape my memory right now. Of course the places we visited all had their own special names too, all very clandestine. None of them very hard to work out really had anyone really wanted to. A chapter in modern history written down and consigned to the archives, but I just had to recall some of it on paper just to relive some of the fun again.
