Installing a wall fountain on your patio or in your garden will do wonders for the atmosphere of your outdoor living space. These were essential elements in the courtyards of the people in Ancient Greece and Rome because they gave the residents that flow of water they needed for drinking and cooking.

While you do not need to use them in this way today, they do add a decorative touch that is impossible to replicate in any other way. They will give you the soothing comfort of the sounds of flowing water to help you relax and you can design the wall fountain so that it looks as if it is a natural part of the landscaping.

A wall fountain operates in the same manner as any other kind of fountain, even though it may have a different design. The water circulates throughout the fountain from the holding pool or basin through the pump and back up to the fountainhead from which the water spouts.

You can have the water pouring directly from a fountainhead of a specific design directly into the pool, overflowing the basin or trickling down over a series of shelves or ledges. The fountainhead can give the image of water pouring out from the mouth of an animal or a mythical creature or an object, such as a teapot or watering can.

Different types of masks for garden wall fountains are readily available in garden centers and from online retailers that specialize in fountains of all kinds. You can hang one of these masks on any kind of wall in your garden. The main focus in this type of wall fountain is to make sure that you hide the plumbing inside the wall.

You can use a sheet of glass or any other material as the surface over which the water pours from the mouth of the mask or you can also use a design of different materials to provide contrast or make it seem more natural in the setting.

The components of a wall fountain remain the same regardless of what you choose as the fountainhead. You need to have a basin in which the water collects when it pours to the bottom, a submersible pump, and tubing that takes the water back up to the top again. The pump is usually installed in the basin or the pool and takes the water from the pool into the tubing.

The pipe or tubing needed for a wall fountain can be hidden inside the wall or inside the masonry units of the fountain. However, if you decide to hide the plumbing, you need to make sure that you can get at it easily if a break occurs without having to dismantle the wall causing extensive damage to the fountain.

You also need to have electricity connected to the fountain for the operation of the pump. This electrical connection is also important if you want to connect lighting to outdoor wall fountains, making it possible to enjoy the sight of the water after the sun goes down. It is a good idea to have the electrical switch for the wall fountain located inside your home.

The switch is important for when you are not making use of the fountain and want to shut off the water. You can also attach a three-way valve to the pump to let you control the flow of water. A float valve on the water line will make it easier to top up the water if you notice that it is evaporating at a fast pace.
