Montec is a trusted name in the industry and I have used them for a while now. I actually started off using the practice heads and then moved on to the regular broadheads. They are great quality, but not exactly cheap. While they were worth every penny I am always out to save a few pennies and I got a good tip from a buddy of mine.

The Carbon Steel Montecs are pretty much unbreakable in my experience, and this is a big plus. I hate to see broken blades and once you let that shot go you don’t know what it is going to hit. Sometimes you can get a clean shot through an animal and then find that you have broken your broadhead on a rock on the other side. It happened once with the Carbon Steel broadhead and the thing remained intact. I was really impressed with that. The Montecs came sharp as you can imagine out of the box and they sharpened up very easily once they had been used for a while. I found that this was not always the case with broadheads and they really lose their effectiveness when they are dull.

Now back to the tip that I got from a friend of mine; he had heard that the practice heads for the Montec CS were basically exactly the same as the regular heads, made of the same Carbon Steel construction that give them the excellent durability that they are known for. With that in mind he took a few of the practice heads and filed them down a little. After using the file, he then took a graduated sharpening stone and passed the blades over a few times on the coarse side and then a few times on the finer side. The result was that the practice broadheads had the sharpness of the regular broadheads. The advantage was that he saved about ten bucks in the process. I gave it a try and I have found that I got the same results. Luckily, the practice broadheads are made with the same high quality standards as the regular ones. They were also very easy to sharpen once they became a little dull, just like the regular ones. I have taken down some big animals with the sharpened practice heads, and nothing wins you over like success on the hunt.

Lots of people are wondering about the helical fletching and exactly what bevel they should use with this. Really, you should match your broadheads with the fletching and you will be ok. If you have rotation in either the right or left direction, you should have the bevel to match so that you maintain maximum penetration. Experiment with it a little and you will eventually get it right. If you don’t already know whether you have clockwise rotation (right wing feathers) or counter-clockwise rotation (left wing feathers) you can take a look at photos on the internet that should show you which way they will go. If you are using straight fletching, then the bevel doesn’t really matter.

As it goes, a clockwise rotation means that you should use right beveled broadheads. The same is true for the opposite, of course. If you are buying your broadheads direct from a manufacturer, you can try asking them to bevel the broadheads to your specifications, they will generally be happy to do that for you.
