Situated an hour and half from Palma, the friendly coastal town of Puerto Pollensa in the North East corner of Mallorca is the perfect place for a summer holiday getaway. The wonderful Mediterranean climate, white sandy beaches and established tourist infrastructure, has seen it emerge into a popular destination for visitors from abroad to rent a holiday villa. Puerto Pollensa is set in a stunning location against the backdrop of the Tramuntana mountain range and it has also become a favourite with a host of celebrities – if you’re famous and looking to rent a Mallorcan luxury villa, Puerto Pollensa is the place!

In the Port

After a relaxing day on the beach, join the nightly promenade as locals and visitors alike, wander up from their Pollenca villas along the cypress lined marina for their evening ‘paseo’ or stroll. As you pass you will hear the clinking of the mast ropes of hundreds of boats moored at the marina, interspersed with the chatter and activity of al fresco cafes and restaurants. On a balmy evening as you wander from your holiday villa, Puerto Pollensa will envelop you in its comfortable embrace. Make sure you pass by the magnificent Hotel Miramar with its bohemian charm and balconies overlooking the sea, and you may feel like you may have stepped back to the 1900’s.

Head to the town

The town of Pollensa itself is about 6km inland from the port and the main concentration of Pollenca villas. It is a trip well worth making as the town is steeped in a long history that has seen the involvement of Egyptians, Romans, Moors and Ottomans. There is not much evidence left of the Romans though, except a lovely old bridge crossing a stream which runs through the centre of the town.

The town’s cobbled streets and narrow side lanes are lined with grand old houses, and the wonderful 17th and 18th century architecture seems a million miles (and years) away from the more modern portside Pollenca villas. Make time to visit the church of Sant Jordi - a very grand Gothic church, which in past times has been used as a hospice, and as a refuge from pirates in the days of such things! There is also the convent of Santo Domingo, and once a year in the cloisters, a music festival is held here. Many people come up from their holiday villa in Peurto Pollensa to join in the fun.

Perhaps the most rewarding thing you can do is to ascend the steep climb of the Via Cruci. It is around 350-400 steps, but the walk is lined with picturesque cypress trees, and your prize at the top is not only the statue of the Mare de Deu del Peu de la Creubut, (the mother of God at the foot of the cross) but also the fabulous panoramic sweeping views. You can see out to the surrounding countryside, and down to the horseshoe bay of the port and the Pollenca villas below.

Everyone’s reasons for coming to this stunning part of the world are different. Some come for the fabulous walking and cycling routes in the mountains above the Pollenca villas; some come for the sea, sand and the Mediterranean sun; and the rich and famous few come to escape the paparazzi and relax in their luxury villa. Puerto Pollensa is many things to many people, but one thing is for certain – once will never be enough.
