In today’s world everyone is looking to save money and if at the same time if they can help the environment all the better. Some people are looking to taking a step further and want to stop giving their hard earned money to the utility companies by making their own electricity and start to live off the grid. This idea is not as hard as you think, and this article will explain what you can do to make this a reality.

Lets first look at the advantages to being of the grid:
1. No more being dependent on the utility companies. If the power goes out you have no control over when it comes back online, wouldn’t you like to be in charge?

2. Not paying for the power you use and no longer having to worry about the electricity meter. By creating your own power you can make use of the solar power and wind power to create electricity in your home.

3. Stop the bills coming through the post, alternative power solution may require an initial outlay, but you have to remember you are going cut your bills, and if you do the number s you may be surprised how quickly you can make your money back

4. Helping the environment and the future generations, by helping to give them a healthier and greener future.

So what are the options available to you to create your own electricity at home

The first option is solar power, this allows you to turn the power of the sun into electricity by using photovoltaic cells that are used to create solar panels. The next option is a wind turbine, that uses the power of the wind to create electricity. This energy can then be stored for you in a storage system, so that you can use the electricity you created at a later time. If you then combine both solar and wind power in your home you should have all the electricity you could ever need.

Depending on how much funding you have you can either have commercially available units installed for you, or if your wanting to save even more money you can make and install your own. You may think making your own solar panels or wind generators will be a complicated affair that only a mechanically and technically minded person would only ever be able to achieve, but all you really need is some basic diy/handyman skills, and no specialist tools or equipment are needed to get you started.

Nowadays you can get manuals that will take you right through the process to build your own panels or wind generators and how you can store the electricity you create. Naturally you will have to get a professional and qualified electrician if you need to make changes to you main electricity supply. Also remember that most municipalities will require that you have your system inspected and approved even if you go entirely off grid. They need to ensure that it's implemented in a way that's safe for local lineman. During power outages they have to assume there's no power running through the lines. Your system has to be installed in a way that guarantees that.

The cost of building your own solar or wind power system should come in about a 1/3 less than what you would by from a store, and the cheaper you can build, the faster your return on investment. Another benefit is that if you build and install your own system, if something goes wrong, you are going to be the best one to fix the problem, and won’t have to pay for a professional, because you are the professional.
