Abortion Issues: A Public Debate Over a Complexly Private Event

Abortion has always been a hot potato. Clerics, laypeople and several public organizations have made their views clear about what is simply a completely private event. I think its time we took the initiative to make a personal decision by listening to what the pro or naysayers have to say.

The pro abortion lobby fights for the choices of women who would like to get the process done. According to them, it’s the woman’s body and her child and she has the right to terminate a pregnancy when she wants to. The unborn fetus has no rights and cannot be considered a human being as the brain and the heart is formed several days later. While the naysayers say that even a two celled organism that is present in the womb has rights and is to be considered a human being. No one has the right to commit murder and abortion is just that. Even the Church has been quite vociferous in lading large doses of guilt, grief and emotional blackmail on women who want to have an abortion.

In a perfect world every woman would be supported with loving husbands and perfect families that would help emotional, physically and financially into welcoming new children and births into the world. It would be a Garden of Eden where people lived and died happily ever after. No person or child would go hungry, be sexually, mentally and physically abused and we would all be pure as the driven snow.

As we all know; it’s not a perfect world and we are not a perfect people and these are not perfect times.

Every woman would love to have a child. Just watching a child grow is like looking at a purer representation of you. Even women who already have children and have crossed the child bearing age would love to have a child again. But it’s not economically, financially or physically possible to have every child you conceive. And when you really come down to it; I have yet to find a women who has not looked back over past abortions with grief; grief not regret. The thought that that aborted child could probably have been a genius or a savior or just a common person who loved his mother can and will torture every woman who has had an abortion. And to top that, abortion is a surgical procedure. No surgical event is without its tensions and stresses. Every woman will worry about whether she will be able to have further children after an abortion. The fear persists even after an abortion process went perfectly well.

Situations like rape, malformed fetuses and financial difficulties like single mothers with no family support can make it such that women cannot afford to bear a child at that particular time. Who are you and I to tell them that they were wrong? At the time, the decision taken to remove a potential problem could have been difficult but it could have been critical and urgent. The main point of abortion is that; it’s not fair to women to make them feel guilty of the process when they have already made an informed and completely legal decision about their own body and future.

Don’t get me wrong here. I am neither pro abortion nor against the process itself. And believe me I do have a sufficiently medically trained background to know what I’m talking about. I just feel that the people have commercialized what was a completely private and personal decision into a huge political lobby for monetary profit.
