The life insurance industries tell us that we're not buying enough insurance. Well, they would, wouldn't they? There’s a serious side to this, though. Despite the abundance of life policies or those for critical illness or income protection there’s an estimated UK shortfall of over 2 trillion pounds.

This means literally thousands of families have little or no insurance should anything happen to the breadwinner. If they fall ill and are unable to support the family or the worst happens and they die, then it's very likely their family would face a very uncertain future. Everyone aims to do their best to protect their family and this lack of insurance is very worrying.

It makes sense to make provision for their care and now is as good a time as any to do it. There's some fierce competition for your business and you'll be offered insurance at competitive rates.

You'll need to establish what sort of policy you need, beginning with the most basic life insurance. This exists to provide a lump sum, which will be tax free, if you die. The amount insured should enough to cover paying off your mortgage (unless your mortgage is already covered with an insurance for the term of your loan), any outstanding debts and expenses and sufficient money to give capital for your dependents to live on.

Simple level cover will provide for the insured sum remaining constant through the length of the policy, which ends on the insured's death. This is the usual type of cover. The other option is decreasing and is usually associated with repayment mortgages where the amount covered decreases over the term until cover runs out when the term of the policy expires.

Life insurance as outlined above will take care of your family commitments if you're unfortunate enough to die. Have you thought about what happens if you're unable to work due to illness or accident, though? Critical Illness Insurance will ensure that you receive a set sum, which is free of tax, if you're diagnosed with certain illnesses. The list of illnesses will be listed on the policy details. There are no conditions related to how the money is spent and you're free to pay off any debts, invest for income or fund any treatments. You need to carefully read the list of conditions on this. Many diseases are now very treatable and some of the more simple cancers are considered curable and are excluded from cover. Skin cancer, for example, is not covered unless it has reached the invasive stage.

Income protection insurance policies will cover you if you're not able to work due to sickness or accident and should replace your earned income. There will be a waiting period before payments commence - anything from one month onwards. The sooner the payments will start, the more expensive the premium will be. Once payment starts it will continue until your return to work, the death of the policyholder or the end of the term of insurance.

Yet another form of income protection insurance is accident, sickness and unemployment. This covers the illness and accident side of things, plus there is provision for being out of work through no fault of your own. Payments usually last for around 2 years, which can give you valuable time to work things through.

There are lots of variations in cover, particularly on the critical illness and income protection policies. You'll need to check all the details and make comparisons. It's simple enough to go on-line and find an independent adviser who has all the facts at his fingertips and can choose from a wide range of policies to find the ones for you. At the right price too.

Make the insurance industry a happier place and get some advice on ensuring that you don't create havoc for your family if things go wrong. They'll thank you for it. (The family I mean - although I'm sure the insurers will be grateful too.)
