No matter what kind of exercise program you undertake, food is a major concern. It can seem like feast or famine – and sometimes, it really is.

In an effort to lose weight and reveal hard-earned muscles, many frustrated people turn to simple low calorie diets. While this may seem to work well for a short while, it does not take long for the body to lose effectiveness and start to rebel. The simple fact is that our bodies require food for fuel.

There is a lot of speculation about what a well balanced diet is, and it is absolutely true that a balanced diet is different for various individuals. The most basic example of this is the varying need for calories. If you are a very large man who works out in cold weather, you need more calories than a small woman who does her workouts in a warm environment.

For people who are focusing on building their abs and exercising to target those specific muscle groups, it stands to reason that a balanced diet includes plenty of protein, good carbohydrates from whole, natural sources, and a reasonable amount of heart healthy fat such as extra virgin olive oil.

It is important to drink plenty of water and avoid too much alcohol or sugar. While water handles the essential function of removing toxins from every part of the body, processed sugar and excessive alcohol intake can overload the organs, cause sluggishness and bloating, and slow down the process of achieving fitness.

In order to get the most out of your workout, you should focus on feeling good. As everyone knows, eating good food is enjoyable, and when you eat the right kind of food you feel positive about the nutrition that you have provided your body, and you also feel good because the body is in balance.

Some of the best foods to eat include nuts, fish, dark leafy green vegetables, and whole fruits. A little piece of dark chocolate is a wonderful tasty treat that goes a long way. If you plan to celebrate with an alcoholic beverage, red wine is the healthiest choice you can make.

When you eat, pay attention to the flavor and texture of the food, and consider the way that it affects your body. Think about the way that the food is transformed into cellular structure. If you are tempted to partake of something not-so-great for you, it might help to think about the hard work you have done to get your body into shape. A few minutes of greasy french-fried pleasure is probably not worth the extra time you will have to spend undoing the damage.

Find a workout that you enjoy, focus on the good feelings that it gives you, such as the immediate post-workout endorphin rush and the subsequent positive effects of long term exercise. Instead of depriving yourself with diet foods, find healthy foods and recipes that you really like to eat. Having a great body should be a pleasure.
