Your first initial step should be to calculate how much power you will need to create from your solar panels to power all the various appliances in your home. Once you know this you will be able to calculate how many solar panels you need to provide for all your power needs. Any good book or manual will help you make that calculation

Once you know how many panels you will need, you can actually start to make them. You really don't need to be an expert in DIY to finish this project, but it would be a good idea to start small and take your time. Again this is where all the planning and training will start to pay for itself. Any good manual or book will have detailed instructions on what you need to do and buy, and many will have photos and the best will have videos for you to watch.

The first panels you build should really be aimed at creating enough power for just a couple of appliances in your home, then once you are happy with that install, you just need to keep on adding to your system. Your dream may be to eventually “live off the grid”, if so, this is one area where you can't skip getting the professionals involved. Many areas will require that you system is checked over by a registered and qualified electrician, and the local utility company will also want to check your system over, as they need to ensure that you have installed the system in a way that meets regulations. They have to be sure that during power outages their will be no power running through the lines.
