There is a debate about which type of cancer effect women the greatest. Some statistics say that lung cancer is at the top of the list, others would say that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths. Another high risk cancer is colorectal cancer, as well as cancers of the reproductive system. While there are many arguments about all of these, which should be at the top of the list and such, experts agree that these ARE at the top of this list.

Those women that have the highest risks for these cancers, are of course people with a family history of these types of cancers. African American women, Asian and Pacific Islanders are at higher risk as well. Women who smoke, have a poor diet and don't exercise on a regular basis can also develop many of these cancers.

It is important for all women to get cancer screenings early, no matter what age you are, but especially if it runs in your family. Make sure that you get a mammogram at least once every one to two years, and yearly as you get older, since the risks become greater with age. By getting regular tests, you can find out if you have cancer, and if not, then any abnormalities that may arise, a strange tenderness in the breasts, abdominal pain that doesn't go away after your period, bloating that doesn't go away unusually bleeding of the rectum or vaginal area, can be taken care of right away. Many times, if discovered early enough, steps can be taken to prevent further spread.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you need to get in right away. Many women may think that abdominal swelling happens naturally due to their cycle, but this can be a costly mistake. Pains in this area, that don't go away, are a sure sign there is a problem, and need to be addressed right away. Ladies, don't be like men when it comes to testing, and exams, waiting until the very last minute, or when you're in the emergency room.

There are many ways to reduce you risks of getting these cancers, even if you have a history of them in your family. Probably the greatest preventive measure is not smoking, or being around second hand smoke. The carcinogens smoking creates is the leading cause of lung cancer, not just in women, but men as well. If you are a smoker, then you need to quit right away, to give your lungs and body a chance to heal.

A well balanced diet, with a variety of healthy foods, like fruit and vegetables, at least 5 servings a day. Cancers of the colon, esophagus, lungs and stomach can be greatly reduced this way. Limit your fat intake as much as possible, by eating lean meats, like chicken and fish. Meat that has a high fat content should only be eaten in moderation or not at all. Processed foods are high in calories and fat, but low in protien and vital nutrients your body needs, causing weight gain, and raising the risks of getting cancer, as well as many other health problems. There are many other helpful resources online that can provide and abundance of tips and information.
