Balance arm piano lamps have an adjustable folding arm to direct light right at the essential spot. Musicians use balance arm piano lamps to shed light on sheet music and piano keys in venues with all types of other lighting. Where overhead lighting fails, balance arm piano lamps are a portable solution for performance lighting needs.

A balance arm piano lamp is specially constructed to always counteract the force of gravity. No matter which position a pianist places balance arm piano lamps, they will continue to stand and direct light at the right areas. Balance arm piano lamps are lightweight and portable so they can be taken anywhere extra light is required.

There is a good reason for the name balance arm piano lamps. A balance arm lamp works much like a human arm. The lamp cap is like the hand and there are three joints connecting it to the base, or body. Balance arm piano lamps take advantage of the three joints just like a human arm. Thanks to its jointed construction, a balance arm piano lamp can reach almost any point within the hemisphere of the radium of the lamp arm's length.

The four basic parts of balance arm piano lamps are called the lamp cap, the lamp forearm, the upper arm and the base. These parts work seamlessly together to target light where a pianist needs it most. No matter how dark the performance venue might be, performers get the exact lighting they require with balance arm piano lamps.

Different methods create the delicate gravitational balance achieved by balance arm piano lamps. The concept involves a bit of scientific theory and physics. Basically speaking, either springs or counterweights are used to balance out these piano lamps.

Some balance arm piano lamps have coil springs that work in parallel on both side of the pivoting lamp arm. These sets of springs function in a similar way to a single spring. Springs also minimize noise and make it easier to position balance arm piano lamps to a certain spot. Certain springs might make a noise which is difficult to hear over the buzz of a busy concert hall.

Various spring construction is implemented to create effective balance arm piano lamps. Springs might be located on the forearm, the upper arm or both. They may also be located closer to the base of the piano lamp. Springs used to create balance include compression springs and tensions springs. All types of springs have a limited extension length and lifting capacity.

Other balance arm piano lamps use counterweights to keep the light from tipping over. Another way to keep these piano lamps properly balanced is friction. Friction between the parts helps to maintain overall balance. Mechanical solutions are also used to create balance arm piano lamps including hydraulics, pneumatic arms and coupling.

Balance arm piano lamps are very versatile and portable so they are often used for other purposes. From drawing boards to art studios to busy offices, balance arm piano lamps offer essential light for many different types of performers.
